A pickup, outboard conversion unit, or software that takes a guitar signal and converts it to MIDI data. Sometimes this requires the use of a special pickup on your guitar such as a Roland GK-pickup, but some devices can do monophonic guitar-to-MIDI conversion from the output of a standard 1/4-inch guitar cable.
