Fender ’65 Mustang (Olympic White) – Guitar of the Day

Fender ’65 Mustang (Olympic White) – Guitar of the Day

In yesterday’s “New In Stock At Sweetwater” we mentioned the Fender ’65 Mustang Reissue, which comes in Dakota Red and Daphne Blue. But we just got in what we feel is the nicest finish of all, which is Olympic White with a tortoiseshell pickguard and a rosewood fingerboard over that trademark Fender maple neck. This one is just too cool, check out the photos of it posted in our Guitar Gallery.

When Fender first released the Mustang, it was clearly designed as a budget alternative to the pricier Teles and Strats. And if you were to look closely, you’d see that the Mustang was a Fender Duo-Sonic with a vibrato tailpice. It was built in limited numbers in 1964, but production ramped up in 1965 and the guitar remained in the Fender line until 1981. While many guitar players saw this as a “budget” model, session players grabbed every one they could find. Why? The two pickups came with a pair of slider switches that allowed you to turn either or both pickups on or off and (here’s the cool part) in- or out-of-phase. By setting the slider switches the right way, you could get sounds unavailable with any other guitar being built at the time. This reissue retains that feature! It’s also the first time the company has built a historically accurate Mustang.
