Fender Rumble 40

By Sweetwater Customer

The Rumble 40 sounds great, and it's crazy lightweight. I bought it as a practice amp, but it provided enough sound for a small open mic performance. The four-band EQ and the "Bright," "Contour," and "Vintage" buttons give a wide range of control over shaping your sound. Was planning on keeping it at a friend's house, but I'm keeping this close to me instead. My Sales Engineer Kevin Samuel provided helpful input, and the amp arrived the day after I placed the order.

I'd like to thank Caleb stoller for all his help and product knowledge he was awesome help to me! I would recommend this amp for practicing and has good volume in small venues.

The best all-purpose Guitar & Bass Amp!

By Marcus from San Antonio, TX
Music Background: Bedroom Guitar Player

I bought a Rumble 40 and a Rumble 25. I kept thr 40 and sold the 24 (because the 40 is rich and deep...it just has that aound due to the larger speaker). The 40 is wonderful at all volumes and has a rich sound. Its not the greatest Bass amp buy it's solid and worth every penny. However, once you introduce a Boss IR-200 the Rumble becomes a beast! It really shines and is the best amp ever along with the IR-200 and a solid set of pedals. I was looking for a bedroom rig that is compact and isn't too loud yet versatile. Being able to pla bass and guitar through one amp is the best! I was inspired by Fender's Bassman which is technically a Bass Amp not a guitar amp; but is used now primarily by guitarists. I can say that the Rumble does the job with ease. Its the last non-tube (Solid-state) Amp I will ever buy. I also have a Princeton Reverb solely for cleans. Best wishes!

Worked a little over a year.

By ChrisP from WV
Music Background: A Hobby though I have played in preforming Bands part time in My Younger days.

The Distortion started shorting on & off even when distortion is off. Full Blast of crackling, popping no matter the amp volume setting. Never gigged, Home only, occasional use.It would cost more to repair than it cost to buy it.

Great Step Up From the Little Practice Amps

By Scott C. from Colorado Springs, CO

If you are looking for a step up from the cheap little practice amps with tiny speakers, you need to at least consider this amp. It is by far, the best bang for the buck in its price range. I did my research online and this amp was the clear winner. When I got it home and plugged my bass into it, I was not disappointed. I am just an at home plunker, but this bass has everything I need and more. I am sure it will serve me well for many years to come. My only complaint? It is actually so quiet compared to my old amp, I have to look down and make sure the power light is on after I switch it on. Nice tone, great sound and volume, plenty of control options to shape your sound.

There is no need to hunt around for some hidden gem of an amp in this price range, just buy this one.

What do I know?

By Gary from Green Bay, Wi
Music Background: 68 years of honking

The Fender arrived as advertised and on time to join our 20 piece big band rehearsal. Our bass player did a plug and play and announced it good. Me? I'm a sax player-what do I know? Our dealings with Blake and Sweetwater were better than anticipated.

Fender Rumble 40

By Sweetwater Customer

I really love the sound and size and weight of this amp. I am not a professional musician so my experience is only with one or two brands of amps. It has all of the features that I need and even my 13 year old grandson, who plays the cello in school, he also likes to play the electric bass and he really liked the sound from this amp as well and the features.

Overall not bad

By James A. from Anderson, IN

Low power and volume but i signed on for that. It seems super picky about getting eq and gain balanced just so-- and that can take quite a while. All in all, i do like it. Got it because i can't lift heavy things. When i need more volume, i plug the xlr into my headrush 108. mk2 also with pretty low volume with my bass. Together it's fine. so... works out well for me.

Wonderful Amp! Perfect for all situations!

By CB from SWLA
Music Background: Part Time Pro

Overall this is one of the best amps on the market. It gets loud enough to work at an acoustic practice and can hold it's own against a soft handed drummer. At only 18lbs it's so easy to carry around. Fender has sold a ton of these and for good reason. You get a nice, lightweight, loud, and compact package for a great price. If you are on the fence, don't be..... just buy one!

Fender Rumble 40 - a real surprise!

By Brian K. from Northern California
Music Background: Playing since 1965

I needed a small but good sounding bass combo for rehearsals, and so I scanned the Internet for advice from other players. The top rated small combo was a Fender Rumble 40, and I was surprised because I had had some unsatisfying experiences with larger Rumble amps in years prior. All the being what it is, I am really pleased with this amp! First of all, it's lighter than my Fender bass in its case (18lbs!). The 10" Eminence speaker has a good range and reproduces the lower frequencies without flubbing out, the mids are balanced and the highs are clear, The "Contour" feature is my favorite feature - the "vintage" setting produces a big low end and scooped mids, much like an old blackface Showman (to my ears, anyway).
Finally, this thing is surprisingly loud - I have no trouble being heard with a drummer, two guitarists, and a sax player. This amp might be suitable for a gig in a small room, and it has a line out, so I could patch into he PA if needed.

So - five stars!

Better than expected!

By Steve B.
Music Background: Perpetual beginner, always starting over

I bought this amp for practice at home and small jam sessions with family and friends. I'm not in a band and I don't play along side an aggressive drummer so it's perfect for my needs. Experienced musicians already know what they need, so this review is for those of us new to bass amps. It sounds great, is surprisingly loud for 40 watts, and isn't too heavy to lug around, and it has an easy learning curve. I watched a Fender demo video before buying so I had a good idea of what to expect. But it exceeded my expectations. I know now why Fender named it "Rumble", because it really does. Evaluate your needs. If you are playing larger venues, bars or with a loud drummer then get a bigger amp. But this amp is more than enough for home practice and small stages, like restaurants and coffee houses. I think it will be enough amp for a larger venue if it's mic'd through the house PA, but ask your Sweetwater sales engineer before buying.

First let me thank. DAMON FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THIS AMP. He is a super salesman and very honest. As for the amp it is loud at its lowest point around a 2.5 on the loudness scale. I turned it up about 5 and it did what I needed as far as it keeping up with the others I play with. Thank you Damon. I

Perfect for my Martin bass

By Sweetwater Customer

I recently purchased my first bass and went with a 2011 Martin 50th anniversary one that found me. It is loud enough for acoustic play, but needed help when playing in an electric mix or looping. I chose the Rumble 40 based on reviews and am absolutely pleased with the tone, volume, and features. Should I end up with an electric bass, I am certain that it will continue to exceed my need.....

Great little amp

By B
Music Background: Church Music Director

This is the optimal practice amp. I was hesitant about the 10-inch speaker, but it sounds fantastic at practice levels. The controls on the amp let you shape your sound really well, and there are a lot of tonal possibilities. If you need something for full band rehearsal, this is not it... but for practicing at the house it is perfect. Also serves well as a pre with the xlr out. The rumble series has come a long way.

Sweet Little Amp!!

By Ronnie H. from Arlington, Texas
Music Background: Guitar player since 1979. Bass enthusiast since 1982.

This little guy is sweet, and so light!! At 18 lbs., it weighs the same as my first bass guitar (a monstrous 1982 Gibson Victory). With the XLR output, it's plenty powerful enough for the folk combo I'm currently with. And the tone is gorgeous. I only use the clean channel because I like my bass tones like my laundry: clean, dry, and warm. But there's an overdrive channel if you like that. If I was in a rock band, as in days of yore, I'd probably get the Rumble 800 with two 10s and external speaker output, which only weighs 36 lbs.! The designs are otherwise apparently identical. Kudos to Fender for developing this lightweight amp technology. My 60-year-old back thanks you!!

I Love This Little Guy

By Edward L. from Lynchburg, VA

There is a lot of sound produced by this amp. I use it primarily as a personal monitor during worship services, but am certain it would do the job in a small venue all by itself. The sound is just solid.

best practice/acoustic gig amp

By doug M.

I use mine for rehearsals and small room jazz/folk gigs. It gets a great sound, better than my old GK MB-150E, it gets just as loud somehow. and it's a feather. Fantastic little amp for electric or upright bass. The vintage button is the ampeg button, mine stays engaged ;-)

Best practice amp and Small gig amp

By Francis from Downey,CA
Music Background: Bassist

I mainly use the rumble 40 at home for practice which sounds great. Plus it's loud enough for acoustic or coffee shop style gigs. A cool feature that it has is the XLR out so you can go into the PA for support and just use the amp as a small monitor. It is also so light you can grab and go with no problem. The amp really is so light that you can prob throw it across a basketball court (not that I would do such a thing).

I'm Learning Bass Now because of this amp

By Ashley
Music Background: Songwriter

I've had a bass guitar collecting dust in my studio after my gear hoard of a boyfriend had acquired it from a friend. I play guitar and write songs; I am desperate to get over my beginner/intermediate plateau, so I decided to try it and picked this up to seal the deal. It was out of my price range and there is a much cheaper version for about $ less HOWEVER, this thing has so much EQ'ing/coloring potential, plus a line out that the other version doesn't have. Now I love playing bass and don't mind the price at all.

Worth the money upfront

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm a new bass player and I'm older with arthritic hands. I've always wanted to play but allowed life to get in the way. I purchased a cheap bass that came with an 20W amp that is awful. After a couple of weeks I started having second thoughts about this whole bass thing so I found Sweetwater online and began a new amp search. I found a few that seemed great but they were more than I wanted to spend. I then found my Fender. My review is simple it is worth the money upfront because it has kept my playing.

A great little amp!

By Lauren
Music Background: Started on piano, ended up on bass, still love challenging myself!

This Rumble 40 is GREAT!! Perfect for church and small venue purposes, and I'm loving the variety of sounds I'm getting on it. My Ibenez SR300E sounds excellent through it, and at 18 lbs., it's lightweight, too. I'm esp. loving the "Vintage" sound. As always, Brad Irvan was so helpful in giving his honest opinion prior to this purchase; always a good thing when ordering online. Another GOOD buy from Sweetwater!

The Fender Rumble 40 is a QUALITY Product!!

By Brandon T. from Zachary, LA
Music Background: Professional Live, Recording, & Teaching BASSIST since 1987

I've had a few small/practice-style amps and song-learning setup's. My primary practice method is still mainly with headphones, using a headphone amp, a preamp, and a computer with an audio interface. Lately, I've been teaching bass lessons and needed something that helps me teach, play along songs, and interact with other musicians face-to-face. The hunt to find something that sounds good, has useful features, is sturdy, and doesn't "break the bank". At first glance with the features, the price, and the reviews, the FENDER RUMBLE 40 seems to check off all of these points. I've had it for about a week and have been testing it and using it for learning tunes. The 1/8 inputs for the headphones and auxiliary devices are solid feeling and the sound coming through to my ears are really good (good headphones are important to factor in the equation). All the controls, EQ, overdrive, and the tone shaping buttons are coming through, work well, and sound perfect through the headphones. The sound coming from the single 10" speaker is more than adequate from a practice, small-jam perspective, the amp JUST WORKS NICELY. The sound is clear, full, and tight (not sloppy at all). I have seen some reviews commenting on the speaker and the overdrive sounds/controls as kind of "middle of the road" or just so-so. The overdrive sound is really cool, to me. I actually strive to get what it produces when I play live on a much bigger amp. It's definitely useful IMHO and "adds some hair" to the tone. The 10" speaker produces good bass tone for practice and small-jams, and might be very useful for the low-volume gig (it feels like it could). So, don't be thrown off by others negative comments in these areas. The contruction of the amp feels solid and sturdy. I've had practice amps where the controls feel so flimsy, like they're going snap right off the circuit board (not a good feeling). My last practice amp (another brand), input jack somehow started having issues, and I babied that thing. This Fender amp feels a lot more adequate in these respects. The input jacks all feel solid and soldered well, and the controls feel like they would on a bigger amp. The next big test is recording (haven't used it yet for that), but I'd like to see how well the DI/XLR output works in this scenario (the XLR output is post-EQ). If it matches with the quality I've seen this far, I'm hopeful.

By Jill from San Diego

Love my new Fender Rumble 40 for my new bass! Gets the job done and then some. Lots of knobs to explore and it is loud - always good. One thing I did tho was to get a 15 foot cord for my bass so I can give it all the space it's glorious self needs. I'm a beginner but I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with anything smaller lol. I know I have to practice more so I can live up to my Amp haha.

Perfect practice amp!

By Michael L. from Norris, TN
Music Background: Audio Engineer / Composer of Music for TV & Film

It's 18 pounds!!! I had my wife pick it up and she couldn't believe how light it is. My old bass amp was 90 pounds... good riddance! This thing is perfect for practicing and I imagine could be used for small gigs. Sounds great, it's 18 pounds, and it has a headphone jack and DI if needed. I really like the vintage knob... just adds a nice warmth to it.
I'm not a big fan of the overdrive channel but I hooked up a latching pedal, turned the OD volume all the way down and use it as a muted channel for tuning or whatever. You cant beat this amp for the price!

By Randy from IN
Music Background: Hobbyist

I wanted a small amp for family room use, but didn't want something that sounded like a toy and I didn't want to spend as much money as I did on my larger amps. This one worked out perfectly for my needs. It sounds good, it's lightweight, and was in my price range. Plus it can be ran to a PA system if I decided to play out somewhere. Great value for the money if you don't need a lot of power.

A big "Thank You" to Tim for helping me purchase an amp and gig bag or our 12 yr. old son It arrived right on time, we are very happy with the products. Rumble 40: Adequate Sound, Minimally Versatile, and Mobile

By Sweetwater Customer

It's just enough amp to make me enjoy the noises I make while practicing. I've had 8" bass amps in the past and they just don't push enough air to feel like a bass is being played. The Rumble 40 does. Often, I don't use the speaker at all, tho. The headphone and input jacks allow me to use it as kind of a hub for my practice. Even the limited effects built into the amp are just enough to dial in a tone or create some variety while working through patterns and scales. I don't use many pedals so it's almost an all-in-one piece of practice gear for me. It's also light which means I can take the whole operation with me to play with a buddy relatively easily.

Great little amp for the price. As I age I appreciate the weight factor at 21 pounds and it's got good punch for small to medium play areas. Could mic it up for larger areas through PA. Easy to move if we jam at someone else's home. Longevity is only unknown for me. If it lasts like my blues jrs…. It's a keeper for me

great little practice amp

By Brian E. from Idaho

I needed a small amp to learn Bass on, without sounding thin. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on an gear until I developed some skill on the Bass. This amp ticked all of the boxes. I just Fender would put a decent overdrive on the amp.

Pros:
Great little practice amp. Good enough for small gigs. Love tone options buttons. Sounds good.

Cons:
The overdrive is awful. This amp is operating room sanitizied clean (typical solid -state amp). From a guitarist perspective, I prefer a little more color/overdrive from my amps.

Note: A 40 watt guitar amp sounds loader than a 40 watt bass amp.

Worked until it died at the most inconvenient time

By Ethan from MI

It lasted over a year until tonight. I was trying to diagnose a problem with a guitar and wasn't having any luck, tried to google it with no luck and had to turn to strangers on reddit for help and just as I'm about to do the final tests when the light flashed and she started to flat line. I jumped into action testing different outlets and power cords but after multiple failed attempts to resuscitate I had to call it. Time of death 1:38 am, she was one year and 3 months old. Sounded fine and worked well for a normal 6 string when my other amp broke and became possessed.

Perfect bass amp - I love it.

By Chris O. from Prescott, AZ

I'm an amp snob - my main guitar amp is a hand wired Bad Cat Cub - so I was pretty picky about my bass amp - but I didn't want to spend too much money. I've read all the reviews and it came down to this one and the Orange. I'm very happy with my choice - amp is super light - I move it all over the place - and it is super clear with wonderful bass. It is also quite a looker.

Cool little amp.

By Robert E.

This little Fender amp is perfect for the venue that I'm playing at these days. Being retired, my partner and I play for a men's meeting at church every Tuesday morning. The men love the worship music. And because I am old, I'm not able to lift and carry a giant bass amp like back in the days of my stronger youth. This amp weighs only 18 pounds and is easy to cart around. The 10" speaker is the perfect size for maintaining a solid bass sound at 40 watts. I also play an acoustic electric guitar thru it as the song set calls for. It fits my needs sufficiently.

A great sounding practice amp!

By Adam D. from POTOMAC, MD

I did a lot of research when looking for a new bass practice amp to find something that was: 1) less than $500, 2) sounded great, and 3) provided me with some additional headroom should I want to start playing with other musicians, especially a drummer. The Rumble 40 checked the boxes on both 1 and 2, and while I haven't set up to play with a drummer yet, I believe that this amp should be able to achieve a sound that can accompany a drum kit in most practice settings.

Another great aspect of this amp is that it's very lightweight and just about anyone should be able to move this from one practice area to another within their home.

This is just a great amp for small to medium venues, and the price is remarkable for what you get. It is amazingly light for the size of the speaker and the amplitude. The low end is strong, and able to handle tones down to low B on a 5 string. What it lacks is all the built-in effects of Fender's more expensive Studio model. I don't use any effects with my basses, so I saw no reason to spend more money.

Surprised how good this is

By Anonymous from Connecticut

I am primarily a guitarist and bought this for home practice use and to have a small amp in my space when hosting songwriting sessions. I play a MIM Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass.

This amp is EXTREMELY light and compact, which is a big plus. Cosmetically the silver grill cloth and cream knobs look great. The build seems okay, though I notice that the back panel flexes a bit when I plug and unplug the power cable. Will have to be gentle.

The tones are solid with a good EQ sweep from mellow to sizzle. The vintage mode is my favorite. The overdrive is OK and gives another flavor but I will rely in pedals for when I want that sound.

This amp is a great value and is impressive enough for me to consider getting the 700 watt version if/when needed.

Rumble 40

By Franklin S. from Michigan
Music Background: Played music for 54 years various instruments

Light weight, perfect for playing with a band. The line output going into the board make this the best investment you can make for the money spent. Great for acoustic jam sessions and just plain rehearsal. A lot of people have commented on how nice it sounds. For the 199.00 spent I have no regrets. Thanks again to Sweetwater for great service and follow up with it's customer's

Great little amp

This is a great little amp for practicing by yourself or for band rehearsal. You could probably even play a small venue with it. Great sound, lots of tone shaping options and it packs a punch. No regrets.

A lot of boom for the buck.

I bought this for a small light weight amp for home. This amp is so much more then I expected for the money I payed. I highly recommend this amp for someone starting out or like me just wanting a amp to keep at home with excellent sound and performance.

Very nice

By Robert B.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the volume, versatility and tone. Every time I lift it I'm expecting it to weigh twice as much. I can run synths/loops through it to practice drums at regular playing volume, or get an excellent set of tones for practicing/tracking bass. Bass combos have come a long way!

I wasn't sure what to expect out of this small amp, but it is perfect for small venues or as a practice amp. It has all the features one might expect on much larger bass amps, and the price is affordable. Great sound, is lightweight, it's the perfect small bass amplifier.

Price and size do not matter withe fender rumle amps.

By Aiden

I got this a few days ago and I will have to say, this amp sounds amazing! Along with this I also bought a Sterling by music man stingray4 HH and I didn't have to touch the eq at all. all I did was turn it on wh the eq on the amp at 12 o'clock and turn the treble on the guitar up a little and it sounds so good.
another thing I just have to mention is the overdrive. it is super self-explanatory and t sounds like everything I dream of and more. you can make it hot, you can make it crunchy, and anything in between.

The headphone output also sounds really good, and I have some not-so-good headphones.

In conclusion, this amp is a great amp for anything from bedroom practace to studieo recording through the DI out.

Great sound at a great price.

By cspu from ASHVILLE, AL
Music Background: I suck.

I got this during a Labor Day sale for a huge discount. I chose this one because it sounds great and is plenty loud for what I do. It rattles things on the walls in my house if I turn it up and I have no plans to play with a band. There is a lot of tone flexibility here just using the built in eq settings and the controls on my bass. I'm happy with it and I'd recommend it. Also, thanks to Sweetwater for a prompt exchange. The first one I received had an intermittent issue with the clean channel and they sent me another one right away without charging me first.

Great little amp

By Sweetwater Customer

I ordered this as a practice amp for my bedroom and to use at church as a monitor on stage. It performs beautifully in both of those settings. Classic Fender tone, lightweight, plenty of volume and the 4 channel eq allows you to dial in the sound you're looking for. Very satisfied with the Rumble 40.

Small but Mighty

By Sweetwater Customer from Tennessee
Music Background: Retired professional musician who mostly plays for fun now.

This is the little amp that could! I already have another larger Rumble series amp that sounds great and does a great job on medium to large club gigs. I wanted a smaller (even lighter) bass amp to take to several acoustic jams that I attend regularly. I did research on specs and read a lot of reviews then purchased this Rumble 40. I must say, I am pleased and pleasently surprised and the low end this small amp puts out, allbeit at somewhat low volume levels. I have used it several times now playing with several guitars, ukes, mandolin, and even a steel player, also using a small amp, and it has held it's own very well. I highly recommend it!

Built like a light weight tank

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought the Rumble 40 for my granddaughter. It is 18 lbs so she can easily carry it, while carrying her bass on her back. I got it so she could xlr it to the family PA system. That asset alone makes it worth the price. Two days after she got it, her brother, after playing it, forgot to unplug and pulled the amp off the stand. It fell hard face first on the floor. Not a scratch and the solid state electronics were not affected. And it's a great sounding bass amp with essentially three different tones.

Fender Rumble 40

By Jon S. from Texas
Music Background: Over 50 years

I think a lot of people must have a Rumble 40 story from the first time they played through one. Mine was at a jam/rehearsal at someone's house. I was going to play bass and this guy had everything set up. I saw the bass amp was this little Fender practice amp(I thought). I shook my head, thinking this was going to be a disaster. I've been playing since 1966, bass and guitar. A lot of years I played for a living in all kinds of bands. So, here I am thinking this amp was just going to be an embarrassing experience. I plugged in and could not believe how big and clean it sounded. It was comical. I bought one and did the Astrosonic upgrades from Talkbass. They make it even better. Anyway, I really love the amp and wonder just how big a gig it could handle? I don't think it would limited to just acoustic gigs...and rehearsals.

Rumble indeed!

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought this as a practice amp for my music room.
For 40 watts, it's pretty loud and the low end ...rumbles.
You can get a variety of tones from the amp, when paired with the Sterling Music Man bass I bought.

You probably wouldn't use this for a live gig (Unless it's an acoustic type set)

For in home use in, it's great.
Also,it's surprisingly light. Only weighs 17 lbs.

I bought this on the advise of one of the reps. I keep and use it in a fairly small area, ( 300sf ) room. I am still working on tweaks with tone and volume control. Perfect Complement to my Squier Jazz Bass!

By Mike from SC
Music Background: Non-pro

I got this amp due to the good reviews on SW and on media sites. It has an XLR line out in the back which I really like because I may be running this straight into my audio interface (depending on whether it sounds better straight in or mic'd, and whether I need to be quiet while recording). This amp sounds really good with only one 10" speaker. I used to wonder why guitar players always said you need a 12" speaker because the 10" has no bottom end. Well, this amp has plenty of bottom end and lots of bass players seem to depend on sets of 10" speakers for their sound. I did some research on why this was the case and decided that I was not sacrificing anything here. It does sound good, it's got a full, bass-y tone and plenty of volume for house use. In short, I was pleasantly surprised at how good a bass amp this thing is. If I ever play in public with a band again, I may upgrade to the Rumble 100 but for home/garage jams, this little thing rocks! And it looks good too, i.e. traditional Fender styling. I am only leaving 4 stars at the moment because I have not used all the features yet nor have I recorded it yet with the XLR Out.

Nice lil amp

By J$ from Cincinnati
Music Background: Weekend warrior 28yrs

I've owned this amp for over a year and I have to say its worth the money. It's very light and easy to move around. I bought it for home practice and band rehearsal(5 piece cover rock band). For its size and power it's actually quite loud for personal practice. In band rehearsal I have to crank it up to about 75% volume but it hangs in there just fine with 2 guitars and a moderately loud drummer, and doesn't have a farty sound.
I have not gigged with it since I have a bigger amp for that, but I plan to try it out sometime just out of curiosity. It has the xlr post out to run to the board, but I'm just not sure it will cut thru at most venues on stage like my main rig. It has a good sound, and the 4 band EQ along with the gain & voicing options are a very nice & useful touch. You can really shape your tone with this thing. The OD however is not very impressive and I don't use it at all. Side note, it actually works well with my Martin 6 string acoustic/electric. For what it is, it's actually a very nice amp for its segment, and I have no regrets with it.

Does Size Matter?

By Paul S. from Allenstown, NH
Music Background: Rockin’ for 55nyears.

Not when it comes to the Rumble 40 by Fender. First, I'm a six-stringer guitar guy with very minimal time spent thumping on a bass over the past five-plus decades. Recently I joined a church music group playing an acoustic-electric guitar and singing, but ….. about once a month or so, I've been subbing for the group's regular bass guitarist when he's out. So, a few weeks ago I picked up a Hofner Ignition series "Beatle" bass for church and home recording. After having my tech swap out some of the cheapo China-made parts for German-made parts and doing some corrective fret work and a set-up, that thing really feels and plays and sounds great. When I went to pick it up, I had the chance to test it through a Rumble 40. It blew me away. I had been looking at them on-line for a while and was split between the 40 or 100. In the end I settled on the 40. The 10" speaker really has so much punch. The Hofner has a deep bottom end, anyway, so for me the 10-inch speaker is a better match for a violin bass than a 12-inch speaker The other selling point is that this has an XLR line out that can connect to a PA if you are in a larger venue needing more power. But for my needs — church, small venues, recording, the Rumble 40 is more than enough. So many people are calling it a perfect practice amp — which it is — but, I do think it is much more than that. Finally, 18 pounds? Are you kidding me? I love that number>

Ideal practice amp

By Stephen H. from FAYETTEVILLE, AR
Music Background: Weekend warrior

This is a great little lightweight amp and its features make it an ideal practice amp, including the headphone jack and aux in for a metronome or playing along with a recording. There are some really nice touches that speak to the quality - specifically that all the jacks are metal, including the headphone jack, which I really like at this price point. Sounds great too. I'd easily recommend this as a first amp or a practice amp.

The right one.

By Jeffrey L. from Colorado
Music Background: Bass player for number of years.

After a recent conversation with "our" tech fella here at Sweetwater, Ethan, I decided on this bass amp. Have been very happy with it ever since I received it. The switchable overdrive is a particularly useful feature. The 4 band equalizer is also an added benefit of this model. I was alittle concerned about how much "punch" it had. Would it deliver the goods when pushed, without losing clarity? I found that it had plenty of punch for my needs and the overdrive footswitch perfectly suited for my situation. In the studio and on stage it performed flawlessly well. I could not be more pleased with this purchase and Sweetwater. And again, thanks goes out in particular to Ethan for all his help, consideration, and going beyond the call of duty. We appreciate everyone at Sweetwater, what a great company of folks who know what their talking about. They truly go the extra mile.

Super light and Packs a Punch

By Jordan K. from Saint Augustine, FL
Music Background: PT Professional Musician

When this amp arrived at my door, I was Sure they had sent the wrong thing. I picked the box up and it weighed Nothing! Sure enough, this amp was inside! This thing is SO LIGHT! It easily ways 1/2 to 1/3 of other 40-watt bass amps I have used. That being said, it sure lacks Nothing for punch! All I did was flat-line the EQ at 50%, roll the volume up about half way and go to town. It's Plenty loud with a lot of room for more volume should the situation arise. I don't have any comments on durability yet, but I'm not at all dreading carrying this feather to gigs!

Great Amp

By Albert T. from Sacramento
Music Background: 4 weeks new to bass guitar w/guitar experience

I was shopping around for a bass amp that would kind of have everything needed to sound great right out of the box and the Rumble 40 is it. Very affordable, ample power (enough to keep up with my Blackstar guitar amp) and has the perfect additional sound settings. Metal is my preferred genre and this amp is just perfect for doing some serious practicing.

Great little amp

By Chris B. from Ozarks
Music Background: Part time Proffesional.

I've had the Rumble 220 v3 for about a year and love it. While it's not heavy (32lbs) it is a little bulky.
I'm 65 with arthritis in my shoulders and right hand so carrying the R200 up my basement stairs (where my music room is)
Taxing but not impossible. For a gig or an outdoor event I'm happy to do this, but for rehearsal and playing at church I needed something lighter that still sounded great with decent volume and an xlr out..
Enter the Ruble 40 v3. This little 18 pounder is just what I needed for rehearsal and smaller gigs.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone.

Great for what I need it for

By Marcus B. from Indiana
Music Background: Multi-genre/fusion guitarist

I bought this amp because the 50 watt, almost 80-90 pound, tube amp was getting cumbersome and needed a new set of tubes.

The setup I have with it is an Epiphone SG ("inspired by Gibson" with maestro), a Joyo AC Tone for drive and a tuner (duh!); I was gonna use the on-board presets but I thought that it was kinda, sorta too digital sounding for my taste. The clean tones on the amp is loud and crystal clear to my ears and the volume is such that (with a disciplined drummer) I can play over an equal volume with the other players. Theon board effects are neat and I enjoy them, I do whish that there was more variation though.

Would I recommend this to the average garage band? Not really, the on board presets leave a lot to be desired and it'll probably not be loud enough for a loud and proud drummer. However, for the beginner guitarist who's mostly playing in their bedroom, this amp will do the tricks you need it to do.

All criticisms aside, this amp is still a good buy and I really enjoy playing it whenever I need a light and loud amp.

- Marcus

More than I could need

By Sweetwater Customer

I upgraded from a "Rumble 15" and this amp has all the power I will ever need. I do not play in a band, or even in public(I Suck), but I play for me. I do wish I could afford a "Concert Hall amp, but I would be kicked out of my apartment. I looked at 2 other amps and on the advice of my sales engineer, I went with the "Rumble 40". It also arrived so quick that I barely had time to turn off my computer when done ordering, not really, but you get the idea. Thanks Sweetwater.

This amp will satisfy you

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Novice bass player, veteran guitar player

I started playing bass during COVID-19, after first having played guitar since '97. I run a Player Series (Mexico) Fender Jazz Bass through this amp. With this setup, I normally play along to modern-era Red Hot Chili Peppers songs or similar, 311, Sublime, The Animals, and other non-metal type of songs. The sound is deep and full for playing in a small practice room or outdoor practice session, so jamming with band or along to YouTube songs works very well. It's super light, also. You could lift it with one pinky on the handle. It has that second Overdrive channel, though I don't really use it that much. It makes the sound more distorted/fuzzy, sort of like the intro bass line from the song,"Around the World", by RHCP, but not quite as deep of a buzz/fuzz. You would need to buy a separate footswitch pedal, though, if you wanted to switch quickly during a performance. The 3 amp presets (Bright, Contour, Vintage) are really great to use as first step, then adjust knobs right afterwards for tweaking various styles of sound. If you want an amp that is right in the sweet spot between practice amp and playing shows, this one is perfect. The only reason to get bigger amp would be if the size is larger than a 24' x 24' practice area.

Having the experience (20+ as prof.) with many bass amps in both studio and stage settings, for a practice amp it is PERFECT.

I was skeptical, but tried one out for home practice. It can get too loud for the home! Super lightweight but achieves amazing tone and plenty loud for a home use or small band amp. Really, I'm serious, dont let the price fool you...
I just cant say enough how impressed I am with the tone you can get and volume it provides for a small space like a living room or garage (or entire first floor!)
Certainly reccomend.

Surprisingly Versital

By Glenn from Northern Georgia

I purchased the Rumble 40 as a practice amp. It works really well for bass guitar and even recording with the xlr output. This amp is light and loud. You could easily play a small venue with this amp with no problem. It would also be great to use it to warm the stage while connecting to house sound in a church or theater. The sound is very easy to dial in with the on board tone controls. You can get a wide variety of tones from this little thing. The quality at this price point really surprised me.
I stumbled on something else that surprised me. I play guitar through a modified Blues Jr. It sounds good on its own but I decided to set up my pedal board in stereo and used the Rumble for my second amp... Its what I had handy. Wow! The combination of the two left me with some amazing tone.
Sweetwater delivered my order very quickly. Overall I am really pleased with my purchase. This was a no hassle, get more than you expected experience.

Really Amazed at the Sound Quality

By Steve from Virginia
Music Background: Just Play for Fun

I've played six string guitars for years but I recently bought a new bass and this is the amp I chose based on the recommendation from my Sweetwater sales rep. It's impossible for me to compare this to other amps because this is the only one I've ever owned but as a new bass player I really like all the different sound options I can get out of this thing. It's amazing that for just $... this amp has three voicing options and several other settings to adjust (that I'm obviously still learning to use) so the sound possibilities are pretty wide open. It also sounds great at a low volume which helps a lot because I live in a townhouse with neighbors on either side of me. I'm able to get a deep, rich sound out of this thing without upsetting anyone next door. I think this amp will surely meet all your practice needs and some people even gig with it. I'm so glad I listened to the advice from my sales rep because I couldn't be happier with this amp.

Exceeded Expectations

By Emho R. from NYC
Music Background: Semi-pro bass player since 1970's. Multiple genres.

I purchased this amp for home practice, smaller gigs without drums, and live in-studio with a drummer. Sound quality and volume exceeded expectations in all situations. It's not suitable for large venues, or very loud bands, unless you're planning to plug into the PA. But it's more than adequate for low to mid-volume applications.
There are obviously limits to the feel and presence you get from a 1x10. But the amp has a nice deep and solid bass tone. It sounds "bigger" than other 1x10's I've used.
Overall sound quality is very good. Definitely a Fender amp sound with everything set flat. But lots of other options when utilizing the filters and eq. I'm using P basses with both flats and rounds, along with J, and active basses. I've been happy with the sound from all. Note all are 4 stings, so I cannot comment on low B.
And, it's 18 pounds!

Amazing sound in small package

By Jim from Pittsburgh
Music Background: Played in rock bands for 20 years

I've been playing in bands for 20 years and have seen bass players carry huge rigs around and sometimes they don't have the same well balanced sound that this little guy does. Obviously it's not as loud, but it's still very loud. I could never play it full blast in my basement, I play it around 25% volume to get a comfortable level jamming along with tracks on the stereo. The low end is impressive for that little package and the 3 EQ buttons are fun to play with. Very happy with the purchase.

Went with this over the VOX VB50 and wondering if I should have. What's 10 more watts I said, well ends up not much with the Rumble 40. Great Practice Amp, Cool Features

By Sweetwater Customer

Before this amp, I owned the Fender Rumble, v. 2, 15 Watt. Comparatively, this is a much better practice amp. The 10" speaker sounds much better than the 8" inch speaker on the 15 W, especially the low frequencies, and the tone options are fantastic. The vintage voicing is especially good, and the contour setting is great for thumping & plucking (slap & pop). I also like that you can boost or cut the low mids and high mids. This amp won't be enough for a gig, but when just playing at home, it's awesome, and amazingly light. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Recently purchased this after much research for a practice amp. Looked at this or Ampeg, read
a lot of reviews and talked with some local bass guys that play in bands and teach, they recommended the Fender.
I like Blues and Jazz, and recently decided to pick up bass. Playing a LTD B -204SM 4 string bass , the amp sounds great is small and lite but gets plenty loud for my needs. The "Vintage" setting works perfect for me
all else guitar and amp is set flat or at detentes. Sweetwater followed up with a phone call from James Loran, sales engineer, right after order was placed, shipped quick and packed well. Great for my Use.

By Sweetwater Customer

My 200 watt unit was more than I needed and the cooling fan drove me crazy. This smaller unit works perfectly for me for practice in a small room. No where near cranked up and it is fine. I suspect it will be fine for my use in larger areas. The sound is fine and the tone options are more than I need.

Perfect

By Wayne from San Antonio, TX
Music Background: Self taught

I got this amp so my Jr High & High School students can have something loud enough to cut through drums & electric guitar at school and take to performances. It's perfect, really. Small, extremely light and has all the functions as my Rumble 500, mainly the line out. As usual, Ramses and the folks at Sweetwater we're all great. The amp arrived earlier than expected and unabashed. Thanks y'all!

Great tone and easy to carry

By Sweetwater Customer

I got this to use in my apartment mostly, and quite good overall. Lows and highs are very clear even the master volume is not wide open. Haven't tried in a small venue gig, but might be enough for acoustic performances.

Great amp for the money

By Chuck from NE Indiana
Music Background: Amateur, Worship Team

Purchased this amp for a at home practice amp. One reason for purchasing this model over others is the xlr out providing more options for its use.
Good tone and while not going to fill a large auditorium it does have more than enough for a large room.
Thank you Greg for helping in this purchase

Get this, not the Rumble 25.

By Gary from IL

I initially bought the 25, but immediately returned it. Not enough beyond a small bedroom and sound quality wasn't there. The 40 is sooooo much better. Lightweight to take to practice or over to someone's basement for a jam. You won't find anything better for the same price. Decent tone and distortion options as well. Your back will love it as well.
There's a reason these do not stay in stock very long.

I am 100% satisfied with this amp

By El T. from New Mexico
Music Background: Bassist

I am playing a lot of smaller venues now accompanying amplified acoustic players, fiddlers, and mandolin players; sometimes a drummer. Even though my small venue "tone monster" rig, a Carvin BX500 through an Aguilar GS112, produced killer tone, I got tired of lugging that 42 lb. cab around. I had been looking for a lightweight solution for several months; mostly a lightweight cab I could run the Carvin through. Because there was no place to go and actually demo some of these newer products (TE Elf 1x10, for example) nor did I find any good (tone quality) demos/reviews on YT, I decided to give the good old Fender brand a try. This little combo turns out to be exactly what I was hoping for. It has plenty of volume. I have yet to need to turn the gain + master past the 10 o'clock position (7 o'clock = 0) and have been asked to turn the volume down on several occasions. When playing with a full band, I use the XLR Line Out connection, using the amp as my personal stage monitor and running through the P.A. for reinforcement to the house; works great! As far as tone, this amp provides some nice features to shape the tone. Just realize that there is a trade-off. Depending on any other rigs you may run, you will sacrifice some resonance for the lighter weight of this amp. However, I have had no complaints yet from any of my fellow musicians and have received nice compliments from audience members about the sound. In case you're wondering, my Number1 is a Squier Classic Vibe P with Aguilar "HOTS." Let me give a shout out to my main man @ Sweetwater, Kyle Malone. Thank you, Kyle, for all the outstanding service and assistance you have provided through the years. Obviously, I recommend this combo as an easily portable amp for small-to-medium sized venues.

Lightweight, versatile, sounds great - what's not to like?

By Pcake from Los Angeles

I usually have a smaller combo for practice and quieter jams and a head and cab rig. I had a Fender Rumble 15, but while it was loud enough for home practice, it sounded more like a guitar amp than a bass amp. But I had liked the more powerful Rumbles, and I also thought the Rumble 25 sounded pretty good. I also have a Hartke HD15, which has plenty of bass but I didn't manage to find a way to adjust it to put out a variety of tones - it sounds like it sounds. Then my buddies at TalkBass talked me into the Rumble 40, and I'm glad they did.

First off, the Rumble 40 is actually lighter weight than the Rumble 25 because the 25 is made of particle board while the 40 is made of plywood, and it definitely makes a difference to the tone, not just the weight. Next, the Rumble 40 sounds great at very low volume - say, turning down so you don't bother the neighbors or the person sleeping in the house. And my super inexpensive Squier Bronco bass sounds as good through it as my more expensive basses.

I like that the mids on the EQ are split into high mids and low mids. I thought the bottoms - bright, contour and vintage - were a gimmick, but they have let me quickly dial in a good sound for basses with varying voices.

Will this amp keep up with a full hard band with a drummer? Not unless you mic it or use line out to a PA. But it does work out great for jamming with a restrained or electronic drummer and two guitars that keep things turned to garage volume.

I'm much happier with my Rumble 40 than I thought I'd be. All my basses - including my semi-hollow Ibanez SRH500 - sound good through it. Some take a little more adjustment than others, but the bottom line is I can get a tone I like for every bass in my herd. The tonal adjustments are nice, the price was reasonable, and this thing is light enough to carry anywhere with one hand. And unlike some less expensive combos, it has plenty of low end and some nice detail in the tone. I consider this combo to be one of my more successful pieces of equipment.

Excellent for porch board bass

By Lawdy from NH
Music Background: Humming and Strumming for 60 years

I bought this off Sweetwater because I didn"t want to put my porchboard bass pedal through my Bose S1 or my fishman performer. As a solo performer I wanted something with a good thump to it and light weight. This amp is great for my needs. It weighs only 3 more pounds than my S1. I played a big hall and 200+ people this past weekend, and easily filled it with my S1 lined out to the Fishman and the porchboard into the Rumble 40. I am very happy with this purchase and Toni"s help at Sweetwater.

It Rumbles!

By Christopher K. from Columbia, SC
Music Background: Blues / Rock / Rhythm / Funk

Fender does it again with their Rumble series of amplifiers. There is no shortage of build quality with this amp. The Rumble 40 is surprisingly light-weight for its' size. As for sound quality...impeccable. Tight, low-frequency reproduction and smooth transient response are in abundance. There are no muffled, muddy sounds coming out of this amp; just true reproduction of the signal put into it. The four-band EQ permits precision tone shaping while the three-voice presets offer sounds tailored to different tastes. The seemingly perfect combination of a 40-watt amplifier, 10" driver in a dual ported cabinet with an XLR line-output makes the Fender Rumble 40 perfect for practice, performance and studio sessions! If you are shopping for a legitimate bass combo amp, this is more than likely the one you want. It is a highly recommended purchase.

Big Sound From a Little Box

By Bill H. from North California
Music Background: Part-time musician

The Rumble 40 is a very impressive bass amp with great tone and plenty of volume for small- to mid-sized venues. Great little amp

By Andy W. from Michigan
Music Background: Used to play in bands, now mostly in church or home studio

I upgraded from the Rumble 15 to the Rumble 40 and it made a world of difference. The 15 felt like it was struggling to provide enough oomph without distorting for our church's sanctuary, but the Rumble 40 effortlessly purrs like a kitten. The direct XLR output is convenient for plugging into the PA. And while it's obviously larger than the Rumble 15, it weighs about the same.

Perfect Grab and Go

By Chuck W. from Yuma, AZ
Music Background: 50 years professional guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo.

I purchased this amp for a bass playing 80 year old lady who was unable to carry her too heavy bass amp to gigs. She loves the light weight of this amp but more importantly the sound is incredible as a stand alone amp in small gigs and with the xlr out sounds great in the sound system. This amp is perfect, Fender has come through again.

The Fender Rumble 40 is a very nice versatile amp, a great amp for the price. It is also light weight and easy to carry around at 18 lbs. After experiencing this amp for a few weeks, my only regret is that I didn't spend the extra $... and get the Rumble 100.

Excellent amp!

By Shane from Los Angeles
Music Background: 35+ years playing...

Simple: great sound, great build quality and fantastic features.
It has a very low noise floor, and it retains its punch and full sound using the XLR out. However, be advised, it is POST pre-amp. Therefore, all volume and EQ adjustments you make with the amp will come thru the PA system.
I actually have used this amp with my Yamaha Compass Series 700 acoustic as well. It has an amazing, full sound! This fullness and clarity translates great through the XLR as well. Overall, it's a great amp...light too!

VERY LIGHT PHYSICAL WEIGHT

By William F. from LAS VEGAS, NV
Music Background: Years of 'fun with A/V.

When this baby landed on my door I went outside to get it. I picked it up. I was like wt*??? Did they forget to put the amp in the box? No it was in there. Does it 'rumble?" Maybe it's my rooms acoustics, but 'rumble' it does. Problem is, to me it was an unpleasant "rumble."

In addition to putting heavier duty rubber feet on the bottom as the ones that come stock are 'cheap,' I put in a different speaker. It weighs more now. Sounds a little better, I need to spend more time with it, tweaking the sound frequencies though.

Rumble 40 takes the place and exceeds the performance of the former Rumble 30

By Don K. from Carson City NV
Music Background: 50's, 60's, 70's oldies, country, standards

My wife and I play small dances around town, so we need a bass amp that will adequately cover the low end and is easy to transport (we're older folks). The Rumble 40 has enough additional power to make a discernible difference when compared to the previous, Rumble 30 version, and It is very lightweight and easy to move around...I am impressed that we can play small gigs without carrying around a big heavy amp.

Additionally, we use a "mole" pedal to add more low tones...it's not for everybody, but it is a very functional combination for most duo's and trio's.. especially for oldies and country..

Fender Rumble 40

By R. M. from Chester, CT
Music Background: Guitarist, Bassist, Sound Engineer.

The Fender Rumble 40 is a good small amp. Light as a feather. The tone controls have good affect. The Vintage, Contour & Bright buttons do just what they say and offer some nice tone changes in various combination. The overdrive will give enough crunch to make Chester Cheetah jealous.
The XLR direct out on the back gives a seriously clean signal. I use mine patched through the mixing board at an Acoustic open mic I run in my local area. Players have liked it being available.
But my picky soundman ears noticed something. A bare box sound that I knew I could fix. So I shined a flashlight in one of the 2 Bass ports and sure enough, saw a bare unpadded cabinet inside. A few custom cut eggshell audio foam pieces later and the sound became the kind of Clean I want (personal preference). I added the tc electronic Spectra Comp to the rig and the little amp that could became the little amp that WILL.
This little (16"sq X 12"d), lightweight box is a good investment as is and I recommend it even without the modifications I did to my preference. Small gigs will be no problem for this amp and the direct out covers for larger venues. The Fender Rumble 40 worth the money.

Amazing!

By BD from Cape Cod

Ive been playing bass for over 20 years, I've used brands such as Vox, Ampeg, Create, and by far Fender is my favorite! The three tone control differential. Is a huge compliment to previous Fender amps I've seen in the past. And for a 40 Watt amp it's extremely loud. If you're playing with a small band unless if it's metal it's all you'll need.

Amp

By Jeff L. from CA
Music Background: Drummer for 30+ years, Private Percussion teacher

I am beginning at bass (drummer for 30+ years) and I needed an inexpensive amp to practice with and do small gigs. The power of this amp is great along with the tone. For a small amp it delivers a good punch and holds true to the fender quality. Eventually I will buy the larger amperage but that's another story.

What a difference!

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm new to the U-Bass and had been practicing on an old cheap bass amp some one had left behind in a rent house. I was getting pretty discouraged by how I sounded but today, my new Fender Rumble 40 came in and wow! This is going to make a huge difference in our weekly jams. It's light enough for me to cart around and sounds fabulous. This one isn't too loud, which is good, because I don't want to drown out the acoustic ukuleles. I love the vintage button!

Rumble 40 Bass Amp

By Tom D. from Fort Mill, SC
Music Background: 40+ year musician

I have owned the rumble 40 W amplifier for a year. I have had several occasions to play it live and for home practice use. I own an Ibanez SR500 bass that I play through the amp usually with the contour switch depressed, as it seems to add warmth and depth to the overall sound. I feel, with any amplifier, certain adjustments have to be made not only from the amplifiers perspective, but also from the bass guitar going into it, in order to get the right sound out of it. However; I feel this amplifier provides a lot of flexibility for a variety of gigs, including the fact that you can tie it directly into PA system for more depth. I purchased the amplifier because I needed a little more drive than the 25 W version, I'm less volume than the 100 W version. I'm also very fond of the headphone feature, as it helps with silent practicing when in a house of kids. I would highly recommend this amplifier for beginners, home practicing studio usage, and smaller live gigs for rooms under 100 people.

Lil Sweety

I played my Fender Rumble 40 for the first time last night at church and love it. So powerful and with a wide variety of sounds. Light and easy to load in and out. I played my Macca bass and got compliments on the sound. We have a rotating stable of musicians who play in our worship Team and mine is the third Rumble 40 purchased by our bassers. With the post EQ line out,it went right into the board and our sound man spent little of his time dialing me in. When I got home I pulled off the grill cloth and to my delight I saw two lovely little ports. I was recommended this amp and I will recommend it to others.

The Rumble 40 is perfect. I was pleasantly surprised at the excellent sound and really light (less than 20 lbs).

I am very pleased with this little Fender and of course Sweetwater is the best to deal with.

FENDER RUMBLE 40

By RICK Y. from BEND, OR
Music Background: gigging musician, worship leader

i had a RUMBLE 30 that i just loved but sold to a bandmate who has a studio and needed to have a small bass amp on hand (was impressed with the tone and output of that unit for its size) ... picked up the RUMBLE 40 and i am very, very happy with it - i especially love the tone pre-sets (in addition to 3-band EQ), XLR direct out and overdrive/foot pedal options ... these have added even more flexibility to what was already a competent, highly portable basic package in the RUMBLE 30 ... that said, while the classic FENDER amp look is really cool, i do miss the kickback cab of the 30 for onstage work ... however, the new amp is really(!!!) lightweight and it fits easily on either an amp stand or on a simple A-frame guitar stand for tilt-back onstage monitoring - so there is an easy fix ... for me, this little amp has plenty of output for either small venues or as a near-field monitor for big stage gigs, and the XLR direct out feature puts plenty of signal into the board for boom out front (punch) and into the monitor mix for the band ... while we are an "old school" band (70's blues, rock, country) with live amps & floor monitors, we've been working to reduce our stage volume - so LESS IS MORE - another reason why this little package really works for us ... and while i love it, lugging around my all-tube vintage '71 FENDER BASSMAN 10 (4x10) combo amp to gigs is getting to be less & less fun (did i mention that the RUMBLE 40 is REALLY LIGHTWEIGHT???) ... bottom line, i don't think you can find a better throw-it-in-the-car-&-go amp than this, especially for the money ...

I have been playing bass since 1975 and now play at a mega church in my hometown. My wife is the Fine Arts Director of this mega church's academy of roughly 1000 students and she started the first student-led praise band. She had to order equipment for them to use in rehearsal and bought the Rumble 40. When I was rehearsing with the Fine Arts department on a production, I used this little amp to play through. I couldn't believe it! I've had some of the best amplification available to play through but I have NEVER been as surprised as I was with this Rumble 40! I don't know how Fender did it, but they did! Of course, this is the company that has made some of the finest amplifiers in the world. Who would expect anything less? Get one of these and prepare to be amazed!!

Stunned!!...

By rcbass39 from Miami, FL

I've been playing a 90s Mark VIII 350w Peavey rig for years in local clubs with a 4 piece band. When I was presented with the opportunity to play some acoustic gigs with my guitarist I decided to downscale for these smaller venues. Went searching for a small combo amp, preferably a Peavey. I stumbled across a used 50w Peavey combo that luckily didn't work, so I plugged into a Fender Rumble 40 right next door....Wow!!!..I couldn't believe the tone & volume coming out of this relatively small amp...loved the vintage look & it was so light...I spent a little more than I wanted, but got a New Amp that just left me stunned!!!...Fender really hit a home run with this little amp...

Fender Rumble 40

By Don B. from San Antonio, TX

The amp is light but mighty. I use it in a Bluegrass Gospel band with an acoustic guitar bass. The amp is everything I needed, it has good clear tone and enough power alone for practice and small rooms. The xlr line out is great for large venues. Before I played on it I doubted a 10" speaker would handle my needs. But, Fender did it right.

Good Amp, but not Great Amp

By JW from South Carolina

This amp gives you enough power to play in your bedroom or maybe practice with your bandmates. The sound is good for a 10-inch speaker but do not expect to get enough the same depth or volume as you would from 12 or 15 inch speakers. The clean channel is plain so you will hear your bass for what it is if you don't have any effects running. I like the three voicing options (bright, contour, and vintage) because they give you tone options without purchasing additional equipment. The overdrive channel is not great but i like that it is built in. The 4-band EQ is a nice feature since most similar or smaller models usually have 3-band

I was pleased with the value and there may not be a better value on a 40-watt bass combo out there. This item is best for a beginner or intermediate player. However, for advanced players, this is just a light-duty practice amp with easy options and easy portability.

Another great combo amp from Fender

By Kenneth F. from Maryland
Music Background: Busy semi-pro weekend warrior, four different gigging bands

Five months ago I got a Fender Rumble 100 primarily for home rehearsal -- my five star review of that combo is posted here at Sweetwater. It turned out that the Rumble 100 is loud enough to keep up with my rock band in their rehearsal space, so that's where it now lives. I then needed another combo for home rehearsal, so it was a no-brainer to get another Rumble. I'm currently in a condo and the 100 was way more than I needed there, so I decided to get the 40. It is also more than I need for the condo, but it has the same versatile control scheme as the 100 so I chose it over the smaller Rumbles that have fewer features. In short: the 40 with it's 10" speaker doesn't quite have the same magic as the 100 and it's 12" speaker, but perhaps that's to be expected. I still love the 40, though: it also sounds great, and has enough volume for the small local blues jam where management is very good about keeping the guitarists from getting too loud -- we all know how they can get, especially the Stevie Ray Vaughannabes.

I was quite surprised with this little amp. It is great for rehearsals. It is super light and loud enough to play over drums. I didnt think it would be. I use it for bass and keyboards. It was perfect for a keyboard monitor. It has line outs to go into a board if u need it.
It is a great little amp for the price. It has a couple midrange tones and cool stuff.

I really recomend it.

Fender rumble 40

By Jeremy

I don't know what u are all raving about. I can't can't get any tone out of my rumble 40 except for a midrangy dull sound. It has hardly any bottom end to it at all and will not reproduce the full sound of any bass I play thru it. I played a rumble 200 in guitar center and was a total different story. Full deep rich bottom end with that nice treble sheen in the top when dialed in.

Living Room Rockstar.

By Mark G. from Fort Wayne, Indiana
Music Background: Drummer, Backing Vocals, Guitar, Bass.

So I'm a drummer, but got a guitar a few years ago and now I got a bass. So needed a amp. I don't plan on gigging with this, but from other reviews they have since it has a direct out, you can for sure use it anywhere. But I bought it mostly for playing at home. Maybe I get good enough on the bass I'll upgrade. This is plenty of bass for your living room. I'm brand new to the bass so getting this amp at 200 bones, it's got plenty of giddy in its horse. Sounds great, has overdrive, 3 different settings for you to mess with. It's all around a great amp to fulfill your needs. Well, I'm gonna go annoy my neighbors now.

I bought this for coffee house gigs with acoustic performers and it sounds so very sweet in that context. Of course it's not gonna knock down the walls but tone is what I wanted and tone is what I got - and in a very lightweight package too! The XLR line out comes in handy for more coverage and I couldn't be happier with this mighty mite of an amp.

Sounds quite nice in your bedroom when not pushed too hard. Overdrive section is cheesy sounding. Three tone palette also not great. Vintage looks are sweet. Light as a feather. Recommend nothing smaller than the 200 watt version if you intend to gig with a full band.

Great little bass amp for the bucks

By J K. from MO
Music Background: Musician

Very nice amp for small gigs or studio work. Great sound and controls/features to go with it. Well designed back panel options.
I would have been more happy if the back corner had been done in the bevel so it could have been tilted back. No big deal tho, as the other features off set that for me.
The weight factor is a major point for me, as its light and easy to fit in with other gear. Just a fine sounding little amp.
Wish Fender offered a dust cover for it, and maybe they will at some point...All in all great value, plus excellent service from Sweetwater as usual.

Great Sound capability

By Steve L. from PITTSBURGH,PA
Music Background: Cover band musician

I just used my Fender Rumble 40 on a large 500 seat niteclub venue
Went direct
Bet my bandmates that it would sound as good as my Ampeg with 6-10's
I was right
The baddest sound ever and the overdrive was just what the doctor ordered

Great Sound, Great Value

By Jack K. from Redford, MI

Acrually, I am not the only one who has been blown away by my Rumble 40. It has made an impression whenever I have played it out. I use it with my Gold Tone MicroBass and Squier Short Scale Jaguar. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of volume this amp puts out. I have used it in a coffee house where I had no problem being heard with two guitars, banjo, and vocals through a PA system. The range of available sounds is staggering. I will be exploring this for a long time to come. And the weight-it weighs about as much as a bucket of air. You can take it anywhere. Kudos to Sweetwater for getting this beauty into my hands as quickly as they did.

Sounds Amazing

By Sonic R. from Malibu, CA
Music Background: Bass

5 stars. I have 20 years experience with bass amps. I've heard everything; all the different tube amps for bass and guitar, class D, 70's-90's SS too. Fender hit a homer with this '14 Rumble 40. Wow it's loud deep sounding for such a little amp. Very usable in many situations. Lots of great sounds. The gain adds a surprising amount of warmth. The amp takes pedals very well! Cant wait to try recording it with a re20 in it's face.

The one I received didn't work :(

By Robert M. from lexington, KY

Waited for 3 months to get one . Great looking , super light weight , sounded very good but shut down on its own 5 times in 15 minutes under load or no load . I hope they all aren't like that I would love to have one for rehearsals.
