Down and Dirty

Q: I want to run some of my tracks through my guitar stompboxes when I’m mixing. What do I need to make it work?

A: You’ll need a box that can convert the line-level output of your recorder/mixer/DAW to instrument level so it can properly feed the pedals; one device that will do the job is Radial Engineering’s X-amp, which is designed for re-amping, but works well for this application as well.

One the other end of the chain, you’ll need to get the instrument-level output of the pedal(s) back up to line level. You can either plug them into the DI input on a preamp, or use a separate direct box, then route that through a preamp or into a mixer.
