Another stumper: “I have a K2000 and CD-ROM drive and disc all purchased from Sweetwater (Ed- Good Answer). When I load a program sometimes it sounds with a noise like gargles or clicks, if I reload the sound the problem is corrected but only sometimes. I have to load the sounds many times to get “lucky” and get them without noise. I have an internal HD inside the K2000 and it behaves the same way. What could be causing this?”
At face value one would think that the problem is SCSI related, and it’s not a bad idea to check your SCSI cables, connections, and termination. We’ve seen this type of problem with samplers many times in the past, however, and can almost assure you it is RAM related. NOW HEAR THIS: All RAM is NOT created equal. Like most things RAM boards have tolerances in manufacturing, and in some cases these tolerances are surprisingly wide. Not all musical instruments are as robust as the better computer systems and certain inconsistencies in RAM chips DO cause problems. Many times samples will load in and play just fine, but will gradually get more and more noise and distortion over a period of hours. Swapping out for more compatible RAM corrects this problem permanently. Sorry, but I’m going to go into salesman mode on you here for a second. We stock only RAM that we have tested and know works with the various samplers and computers we sell. One ingredient in assuring the integrity of your samples is to use very high quality RAM that is certified for the machine you are putting it in.
