United Studio Technologies UT FET47 Large-diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone

A newcomer to the world of microphone manufacturing, United Studio Technologies went bold with its first release: the United Studio Technologies UT FET47 large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone, a meticulously re-created and reimagined version of a legendary FET condenser. Studio pros at Sweetwater instantly recognized that the UT FET47 mirrored the coveted sound of the original mic that United Studio Technologies chose to emulate, including the hefty bottom end that makes it ideal for kick drums or bass amps and the crisp, present midrange that flatters vocals and rocks on overheads. Crafted in the USA, the UT FET47 contains premium components carefully sourced by the folks at United Studio Technologies: a CineMag transformer, NOS FETs, vintage polystyrene capacitors, and a custom capsule made in cooperation with famed capsule designer Eric Heiserman. And, while the UT FET47 is deeply rooted in the past, it has a crisp, articulate sound that compliments contemporary pop, rock, and R&B. For this much microphone, the affordable price is truly shocking!

RODE NTK Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone

The RODE NTK large-diaphragm microphone produces a warm sound with an unmistakable vintage vibe. RODE has built its reputation by providing value-packed pro audio equipment without cutting corners. Equipped with a twin-triode 6922 valve and an externally polarized capsule, the RODE NTK has an impressive dynamic range, allowing you to capture detailed, accurate recordings of sources as varied as delicate percussion instruments, belting vocalists, and booming kick drums. RODE mics are also known for a pleasantly boosted top-end response that adds a touch of air to open up your recordings for a more energetic and realistic sound. If your tastes run toward the vintage, then the RODE NTK may be the perfect mic for you.

Mojave Audio MA-201fet Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

As the solid-state brother to Mojave Audio’s celebrated MA-200 large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone, the Mojave Audio MA-201fet large-diaphragm condenser microphone is built to the exacting standards of its creator: respected microphone designer David Royer. The MA-201fet is filled with exceptional components, such as a Jensen audio transformer, a military-spec FET, custom-designed resistors, and a hand-selected, gold-sputtered capsule. All of these premium pieces add up to a superior-quality microphone at a great price that arguably outperforms some higher-priced mics. Though it exhibits a mostly flat frequency response, the MA-201fet has a dash of character, owed to a gentle 100Hz boost and a tasteful accentuation around 3.5kHz. The MA-201fet has a fixed cardioid polar pattern, which is great at rejecting sounds outside of the mic’s sweet spot. However, if you’re looking for more polar-pattern options, then check out the Mojave Audio MA-301fet large-diaphragm condenser microphone. It’s got the same guts but also includes omnidirectional and figure-8 polar patterns. And it still comes in at under a grand!

Austrian Audio OC18 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Austrian Audio hails from Vienna, Austria — known as the “City of Music” — which is also home to some of the most respected microphone manufacturers of all time. The engineering team at Austrian Audio carries that heritage forward with more than 300 years of combined experience. But Austrian Audio isn’t simply interested in making microphones like those that have come before. Instead, the company applies old-school craftsmanship to designs utilizing the latest technology, resulting in microphones that are like no others. The Austrian Audio OC18 microphone is a fixed-cardioid condenser outfitted with the same handcrafted CKR12 large-diaphragm capsule found in Austrian Audio’s flagship OC818 multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser microphone. With selectable -10dB and -20dB pads, the OC18 can handle extremely loud sound sources; and it has a 3-position highpass filter (40Hz, 80Hz, and 160Hz) for cleaning up unnecessary low end. For something a little different, take a look at Austrian Audio and its growing line of outstanding microphones and mic accessories.

Warm Audio WA-87 R2 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Since entering the pro audio industry a little more than a decade ago, Warm Audio has become a household name. That’s in large part due to its guiding principle of providing studio-grade equipment at a welcoming price for home recordists, hobbyists, and smaller project studios. However, because Warm Audio is producing such high-quality products, professional engineers are filling their mic lockers and rack cases with Warm Audio gear, too. When Warm Audio decided to build its first microphone, the WA-87, the company offered its take on one of the most famous mics in the history of audio recording. However, the WA-87 is not so much a re-creation as it is an homage, inspired by the sound of that classic microphone but with a character all its own. Smooth and rich with a slightly pronounced top end, the Warm Audio WA-87 R2 large-diaphragm condenser microphone also sounds great on most voices. Plus, it excels on brighter instruments with fast transients, such as acoustic guitars, upright pianos, and percussion instruments.

Neumann TLM 102 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Few microphone manufacturers are as well regarded as Neumann (a few of the microphones on this list pay tribute to Neumann’s designs). So, when Neumann decided to create a large-diaphragm condenser priced at under $1,000, it’s no surprise that people had high expectations. And Neumann exceeded those expectations with the TLM 102 large-diaphragm condenser microphone. Though it’s relatively diminutive in size, the TLM 102 is huge in sound, with a pristine, minimally colored tone from its transformer-less design. While many microphones (including Neumanns) are coveted for their color, having a transparent microphone can be exactly the right choice, especially if you have a limited selection of mics or if you’re looking for one mic that can do it all. The TLM 102 is a great canvas on which to paint a tone using hardware and plug-in processors. And, though its frequency response is mostly flat, this mic benefits from a subtle boost above 6kHz that will appeal to modern listeners who have become accustomed to recordings with lively high-frequency content.

AKG C214 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The most affordable mic on this list is the AKG C214 large-diaphragm condenser microphone, which inherits much of its sound from AKG’s renowned C414 XLII large-diaphragm condenser microphone, a studio staple for the last 40 years. In fact, the C214 contains the same capsule found in the C414 but in a single-capsule, cardioid-only configuration. The C214 is an excellent vocal mic with plenty of detail to capture nuanced performances, but it is also a total workhorse. For loud sources, it has impressively high signal handling — up to 156dB SPL (with pad). That makes it a great choice for miking brass instruments, drums, and guitar amps. Trust us: adding a condenser mic such as the C214 to your guitar miking setup is a game changer. Back it off the amp a little and blend it with a close-positioned cardioid dynamic instrument mic, like the Shure SM57 or the Audix i5, and you’ll get greater clarity and a fuller bottom end. In keeping with its workhorse spirit, the C214 is built to take a beating, as it features a scratch-resistant finish, a dent-resistant metal grille, and a gold-plated XLR output.

Audio-Technica AT4050 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The Audio-Technica AT4050 large-diaphragm condenser microphone is another transformer-less condenser with a transparent, mostly uncolored sound. It’s designed to reduce noise, interference, and low-frequency distortion, and it’s noted for smoothing out sibilant vocals. Audio-Technica uses a unique five-step aging process for the dual 2-micron-thick diaphragms to help stabilize them for better performance that will endure over the microphone’s lifespan. The AT4050 is fully featured, offering three selectable polar patterns (cardioid, figure-8, and omnidirectional), an 80Hz highpass filter to remove low-frequency rumble, and a -10dB pad for recording loud instruments. The AT4050 is an all-around great performer that will serve you well in numerous applications.

Shure KSM44A Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Similar to the Neumann TLM 102 and the Audio-Technica AT4050 large-diaphragm condenser microphones, the Shure KSM44A large-diaphragm condenser microphone is made to deliver a crystal clear sound that captures sources with minimal sonic alteration. Shure achieves this with its proprietary Prethos Advanced Preamplifier Technology, which exhibits ultra-low self-noise under 4dB — that’s 6dB quieter than the sound of a falling leaf! But that’s not all Shure included to make the KSM44A one of the most transparent microphones at any price point. It also contains premium componentry, a 3-stage internal pop filter to eliminate plosives, and gold-plated connectors for reliable connections every time. And, to keep your KSM44A safe, every unit is shipped with a ShureLock suspension shockmount, a ShureLock stand mount, and a carrying case.

Lauten Audio LA-320 V2 Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone

The Lauten Audio LA-320 V2 is one of the most value-packed workhorses in Sweetwater’s inventory of large-diaphragm tube condenser microphones. Its onboard sound shaping toggles between vintage warmth and modern clarity, giving you two distinct flavors. It’s almost like getting two mics for the price of one! To top it off, the LA-320 V2 imparts gentle compression and a balanced character to every signal it touches, negating the need for a top-dollar signal chain to get pro-level results. This excellent microphone comes with an external PSU, a cable, a shockmount, and a storage bag.

Telefunken TF11 Large-diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone

The Telefunken name commands instant respect in high-end studio circles, and the Telefunken TF11 large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone offers an excellent opportunity for project studio owners to get in on the action. Even though it boasts a comparatively modest price tag, the TF11 isn’t a Telefunken in name only — it’s the real deal. No matter what you place this large-diaphragm condenser in front of, you can expect an open, detailed, and decidedly “Austrian” sound with a hyper-fast transient response. The TF11 includes a shockmount, stand mount, mic sleeve, and case.

Lewitt Pure Tube Essential Tube Condenser Microphone

Are you searching for a topflight vocal mic in the sub-$1,000 range? If so, then you owe it to yourself to run the Lewitt Pure Tube Essential tube condenser microphone through its paces. This large-diaphragm tube mic flatters every voice that steps up to it, injecting vocals with warmth, richness, and natural-sounding articulation. A transformer-based filter compensates for proximity effect, while low self-noise ensures a squeaky-clean recording with soft-spoken singers and hard-core screamers alike. The Pure Tube comes with a mic mount, an external PSU, a cable, and a transport bag.

sE Electronics T2 Multi-pattern Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Even though it sits in a comfortable price range, the sE Electronics T2 multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser microphone sports a unique, titanium-sputtered dual-diaphragm capsule that puts it in its own category. This lightweight design gives the T2 an outstanding transient response tailor-made for fast-attack instruments. You also get four polar patterns (figure-8, cardioid, hypercardioid, and omnidirectional) and several low-cut filters and attenuation pads, which make the T2 one of the most versatile mics in its class. The T2 comes with a shockmount and a rugged hardshell case.
