First introduced in 1950, the Broadcaster was the first two-pickup “Telecaster” to market. In 1951, Gretsch sued over the name, as they’d already registered the “Broadkaster” name for a line of drums. So in 1951 Fender changed the name to Telecaster, as it has been known ever since.
Esquire
The Esquire was the original, single-pickup production solidbody electric guitar released by Fender. Not long after its introduction, Leo Fender changed the design to include a second single-coil pickup in the neck position, and changed the name to Broadcaster and finally to Telecaster.
