Guitar amplifiers were first made in the 1930s using vacuum tubes. The amps made by various companies such as Fender, Vox, Marshall, Ampeg, Orange, Valco, and others between the years 1950 and (arguably) 1980 became the amplifiers that, along with the guitars from that period, in many ways defined the sound of electric guitar in popular music. It is these amps that are considered “vintage”. Since the 1990s, many of these classic amps have been reissued with modern enhancements, or modeled for guitar amp modelers. Both the reissues and modeled versions and, of course, the original amps are popular today.
