A guitar with two independent necks attached to a single body. Most double-neck guitars are electric solidbodies, but acoustic double necks and hollowbody double necks have also been made. There have been many variations of double neck guitars and basses. The most popular of these combine 6- and 12-string necks, with separate pickups and controls for each. Double necks may also combine a 6-string guitar with a 4-string bass, mandolin, fretless guitar, or even an octave-tuned guitar. The most famous double-neck guitar is unquestionably Jimmy Page’s Gibson EDS1275, with Don Felder’s double-neck guitar, as used on “Hotel California” a close second. Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee of Rush often both used double-neck instruments simultaneously onstage (6- and 12-string guitar and 6-string guitar and 4-string bass, respectively.) Rick Nielson of Cheap Trick took this concept to an extreme with his custom 5-neck Hamer guitar.
