Bucket Brigade Device

A “bucket brigade device” (or “BBD“) is a discrete-time analog delay integrated circuit developed in 1969 by F. Sangster and K. Teer of the Philips Research Labs. The device consists of a series of capacitors. Analog audio signal moves along the line of capacitors, one step per clock cycle. Even though BBD chips have been superseded as far as maximum capacity, reliability, and transparence, by digital delays, many musicians swear by the warmer, darker tone of analog delay.
