Ever wanted to play a suspension bridge? That’s exactly what artist Di Mainstone does with her Human Harp. Mainstone attaches eight magnetic modules, each containing a retractable string to a bridge. The strings are attached to a vest she wears. Sensors in the modules detect how much string has been pulled out, the angle the string is pulled at, and the force upon the string. These parameters are used to trigger and manipulate synthesized notes based on sounds taken from the bridge itself. Ableton Live is used to record and process the notes that result.
