Korina’s true name is Limba, which is found only on the African continent. In the 1950s, to dispel the industry perception that Gibson was stuck building only traditional designs, company president Ted McCarty designed three brand new guitars, the Flying V, the Explorer, and the Moderne. All three were to be crafted using an unusual wood for the time, which Gibson called korina. This is a medium to heavy weight timber with a naturally waxy feel to it. The tone is somewhat similar to mahogany, but with some added midrange. It is an excellent choice for hollow chambered bodies.
