In 1962, Gretsch introduced a combination electric guitar and amplifier built specifically for the ladies. Ad copy for the Model 6106 proclaimed: “Now for the first time, a guitar that is unmistakably “hers.” When she’s out in front of others, she’ll see the admiration in their eyes. Her guitar is specially finished in a variety of pastel colors, and available only from Gretsch, her own complete ensemble, a Princess guitar with its own compact, matching white amplifier and matched guitar case!” The single-pickup, double-cutaway Princess solidbody guitar was available in white with a grape pickguard; Blue with a White pickguard; Pink with a White pickguard; and finally, White with a Gold pickguard. Most Princess guitars have a padded back, similar to that seen on various Chet Atkins models. All had a single HiLo’Tron pickup in the bridge position and some came equipped with the Tone Twister vibrato. The matching lightweight amplifier had two inputs, a jewel pilot light, and a Jensen Deluxe 8-inch speaker. This combination was available for only three years.
