Expansion Card

A printed circuit board fitted with a contact strip along one edge that allows it to mount into a corresponding slot in a computer. Expansion cards provide specific functionality not offered by the computer’s motherboard. Examples include video cards, audio interface cards, accelerated DSP support, additional FireWire or USB ports, network connectivity, RAID and SCSI controllers, and more. A wide range of expansion card formats have been used over the years, including ISA, Nubus, AGP, and more. Currently supported formats include PCI, PCIe, PCMCIA/CardBus, and others.
