An electrical conductor, usually metal, that is used as a contact with a non-metal, such as a semiconductor, electrolyte, or vacuum. The term is credited to inventor/scientist Michael Faraday, and taken from the Greek words elektron and hodos (“way”). Anodes (positive) and cathodes (negative) are the two types of electrodes.
