Electrolyte

An ionized substance (usually a liquid or gel, but could be a solid, a molten solid, or even a gas) that is able to conduct electricity. Electrolytes often consist of a salt compound dissolved in water. As the salt dissolves, ions are separated from molecules in a process called a “disassociation reaction” or “solvation.” Other types of electrolytes are solutions of acids or bases.
