The Sweetwater Tech Support group has noticed a lot of confusion among users about the capabilities of the SuperDrive included with many of the newest Macintosh computers.
When the 1st “quicksilver” G4 units were released, Apple made the claim that the DVD SuperDrives coming in these units only had the software to burn QuickTime movies, Video, and photo media. The reason for this is because the G4 shipped with a program called “iDVD” which does NOT have the ability to burn standard data files. This caused confusion because the drive is perfectly capable of burning file based DVD discs given for software that supports it.
A few months later Roxio’s Toast Titanium 5 comes on the scene. Roxio claims they are the first to incorporate the new DVD SuperDrive on their compatibly list for data files. We have tested this at Sweetwater and found that it (we tested the 5.02 version) works on a variety of machines with the SuperDrive (including PowerBooks), and successfully burned a standard data (with audio files) DVD-R.
Also be aware that:
1) Toast can only burn this media at 2X speed
2) Obviously this media can only be seen on a computer with at least a DVD-ROM drive (If you just have a standard CD-ROM, these discs will not show up).
