Sweetwater’s Airstream Studio

Sweetwater’s Airstream Studio

Before Sweetwater became a household name in the music world, there was a VW Bus — Chuck Surack’s mobile recording studio — rolling through Northeast Indiana to bring professional studio capabilities directly to his customers. Those early days of capturing live music, worship services, and community events across Northeast Indiana built something that remains at the core of Sweetwater’s identity: a genuine bond with the musicians, performers, and creators who make up the fabric of this Midwestern region. Fast-forward to 2026. Now, more than 40 years on, the Sweetwater Airstream expands Chuck’s original vision to the national stage, equipping musicians and creators with an immersive, hands-on experience that’s purpose-built to spark creativity, encourage self-expression, and unlock musical potential. Packed with the latest audio technology, including state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos capabilities, the Sweetwater Airstream allows us to share our passion for great sound with musicians — wherever they are — and transform their artistic dreams into something real and powerful. Let’s take a look inside with Sweetwater’s Mitch Gallagher and Mark Hornsby from Russ Berger Design Group as they tour this one-of-a-kind roving recording studio.

The World’s First Dolby Atmos Mixing Room on Wheels

Designed in partnership with the renowned Russ Berger Design Group, Sweetwater engineered the world’s first Dolby Atmos–equipped mixing room built inside a 25-foot Airstream travel trailer. Echoing the layout of most top-tier recording studios, the Airstream houses a hatch-accessible equipment room, a dedicated control room, and a dinette-equipped lounge area. The entire trailer was retooled for maximum audio performance, including a removable air-conditioning unit designed to be deployed separately from the trailer to eliminate unwanted noise and vibration.

Record, Mix, Broadcast: The Airstream Does It All

The control room features an SSL System T console, Avid MTRX II with Pro Tools HDX, and a 7.1.4 PMC monitoring system, enabling it to tackle remote recording, broadcast, and immersive mixing with equal aplomb. And while the SSL makes a superb front end for recording, its feature-rich design also eliminates the need for multiple racks of outboard gear, which obviously wouldn’t fit into the trailer’s compact dimensions. The Airstream exhibits a surprisingly expansive sound, especially for such a small acoustic space. Moreover, the control room offers picture-perfect imaging, which is crucial for pro-caliber Dolby Atmos mixing. Beyond that, all speakers are hidden behind acoustic fabric to ensure proper monitoring and a seamless aesthetic.

Alongside the audio system, the Airstream houses a Blackmagic Design video system, including a flat-panel display that can be placed on the exterior of the trailer to accommodate large viewing audiences.

The Journey Continues

Whether it’s parked at a music festival, a trade show, a legendary recording studio, or somewhere out in the wide-open landscape of the American road, the Sweetwater Airstream is ready to deliver reference-quality recording, mixing, streaming, podcasting, and live performance support, all from a 25-foot trailer. But, beyond the gear and the groundbreaking engineering, the Airstream is ultimately about people. It’s about meeting musicians and creators where they are, putting world-class tools in their hands, and giving them an experience that changes the way they think about sound. Chuck Surack started that conversation in a VW Bus more than 40 years ago. The Sweetwater Airstream is how we keep it going.

About Mac McDonough

Jeffrey “Mac” McDonough started studying classical violin at the age of nine, but his destiny changed significantly after he plugged an electric guitar into a distortion pedal for the first time — a Pandora’s box that his parents probably wish he hadn’t opened. Mac was bitten by the recording bug in the late 1980s while experimenting with a TASCAM Portastudio and a malfunctioning Shure SM58. He interned in several pro studios throughout the 1990s, after which he began tracking and mixing in an ADAT-based project studio. Aside from writing about gear, Mac currently works on freelance recording projects in his home studio, affectionately named “Mac’s Playpen.”
