Q: I know that I’m supposed to place my studio monitors in an equal-sided triangle with the listening position. But the way my desk is set up, the monitors are a bit too wide. Will this ruin my recordings?
A: Placement resulting in an equilateral triangle is the ideal. Get as close as you can. If the speakers must be placed too wide compared to how far they are from the listener, there are two things you can try:
1. Place the monitors on their sides, but orient the tweeters to the inside. This will likely gain you at least a few inches on each side.
2. When you’re doing critical listening, slide or roll your chair back to be more in the equilateral triangle “sweet spot.”
