A Dual-effect Journey Through Uncharted Tonal Waters

Drench your tone with a torrent of psychedelic modulation and aggressive overdrive with Eventide’s Riptide pedal! At its core, the Riptide is essentially a stereo Uni-Vibe-style pedal and a dirtbox crammed into the same enclosure, with two distinct voices per effect, dedicated footswitches, and a unique order pedal that determines which effect comes first in your signal chain. It’s an instant sonic recipe for the expressive and spaced-out tones favored by so many iconic guitarists of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the Riptide’s full potential! Five onboard presets allow you to instantly call up your favorite tonal combinations, and you can even connect the Eventide Device Manager via USB for in-depth preset management and creation. You also get powerful MIDI capabilities, versatile buffer options, programmable expression/aux switch possibilities, and a Guitar/Line Level switch. Merging all the best of vintage-style drive and swirling Uni-Vibe with cutting-edge digital technology, the Riptide truly sets a new high-water mark for the skilled sonic scientists over at Eventide.

Vintage-style Uni-Vibe and stompbox-inspired drive

While the Riptide’s dual dirt and Uni-Vibe functions offer a formidable degree of versatility, Eventide takes it even further with two custom voices for each of its two effects. Each effect features a dedicated footswitch, making switching between the Vibe and the Drive sections — or combining them — as easy as the stomp of a switch. Plus, you can swap the placement of the Drive and Uni-Vibe effects for a nearly limitless degree of sonic possibilities.

Uni-Vibe section

  • Green: Fans of the psychedelic sounds of the late 1960s and early 1970s will be instantly drawn to the Uni-Vibe’s Green setting — a stunning re-creation of the rich, swirling sound made famous by the original Uni-Vibe pedal.
  • Red: Seeking a deeper, more unconventional Uni-Vibe tone? The Vibe section’s Red voice supplies a sound that strikes a balance between phaser and Uni-Vibe, with a rhythmic and spacey feel.

Drive section

  • Green: Boasting a gritty and midrange-forward bite, the Riptide’s Green drive setting is an exacting re-creation of arguably the most popular overdrive pedal in guitar history. This setting perfectly pairs with the Riptide’s Vibe section to deliver a present and cutting lead tone that’s a must-have when cutting through a dense band mix.
  • Red: In comparison to the aggression of Green, Riptide’s Red drive provides a smoother and more rounded-over response. Sweetwater guitarists favor this setting for moodier lead passages or as a do-it-all overdriven rhythm tone.

Overflowing with functional features

While the Riptide is designed to deliver an intuitive stompbox-style workflow, quite a few handy functionality features lurk under the hood. Five onboard presets are available to save your favorite sounds, with more extensive preset editing and creation accessible via the Eventide Device Manager application.

Looking to take hands-free control of the Riptide up onstage? Hook in a single aux switch for tap tempo or even a triple aux switch to navigate your presets. You can even map any combination of external parameters to an outboard expression pedal! Furthermore, the Riptide grants MIDI capability over TRS/USB for the players out there seeking to build a cutting-edge MIDI-controlled rig. Top it all off with rear-mounted Mono/Stereo and Guitar/Line Level switches, and it’s clear that, despite its compact size and straightforward workflow, the Riptide is ready to go head-to-head with any pro-level Eventide box.

Eventide Riptide Stereo Drive and Uni-Vibe Pedal Features:

  • Stereo Drive and Uni-Vibe pedal, designed with the intuitive workflow of a traditional stompbox
  • Dedicated dual-action (latching or momentary) footswitches to activate the Drive or Uni-Vibe effects
  • Uni-Vibe side sports two distinct voices: A classic re-creation of the original Uni-Vibe and a deeper, phaser-style voice
  • Drive side delivers a midrange-heavy Green voice and a smoother Red overdrive voice
  • Change the order of your effects (Drive into Uni-Vibe or Uni-Vibe into Drive) with the push of a switch
  • Each effect features intuitive per-parameter knobs with no menu-diving or deep editing required
  • 5 onboard presets to save your favorite tonal combos
  • Eventide Device Manager app is available for in-depth editing and creating/saving presets
  • Connect a single aux switch to access tap tempo capabilities; connect a triple aux for hands-free preset switching
  • Programmable expression pedal functions allow for any combination of parameters
  • Harness the power of MIDI control using MIDI over TRS/USB
  • Buffered, relay, DSP+FX, and kill dry bypass options
  • Guitar/Line Level switch to accommodate guitars and other instruments
  • Selectable Mono/Stereo operation

Reviews

Does everything I need
I've been on a bit of an Eventide kick lately with their H90 and figured I'd try the Riptide.
I have to admit, this could very well be the only drive on your board. The green channel which really nails the TS tone is excellent. Definite mid hump that you'd expect but playing with the tone and drive controls allow you to enter Timmy territory. The red channel is glorious. Like a vintage Rat without the mush when you get into higher gain settings. Tbh, the red channel can absolutely crush if you choose that.

The vibes are unreal. I'm using my Riptide sometimes in a stereo setup, feeding dual Two Notes Opus pedals and the stereo separation, wash and thickness of the vibes are glorious.

Eventide knows their stuff. This pedal is a no brainer.

My new favorite vibe pedal
I've been a uni-vibe fan since I first heard Bridge of Sighs in the 1970s. Then, as I began to understand and appreciate Band of Gypsys this became an essential effect for my guitar rig. Have used Rotovibe, Dunlop United-vibe, EHX good vibes, and many others. My favorite for many years has been my Fulltone Mini DejaVibe—it's simply perfect. But, last week, I picked up an Eventide Riptide and am thoroughly blown away. Particularly by the lush, stereo vibe it produces. It's phenomenal. I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but, in a stereo rig, this is my new favorite. The very decent drive section is a nice bonus but the vibe is the reason to buy this pedal.
Still new
Just got it today, and love it. I keep coming up with hooks. The drive side is amazing.Super easy to use out of the box.Money well spent.Would recommend.

Better than I expected!

5 stars if the drive was better
This is a difficult pedal to review, because I really like it, but it's not going on my board. But it's a keeper due to the best, sweetest, most dialed-in lush vibe sound I've heard, maybe in any pedal, including an original. Don't have a ton of use for that, but when I do, this is my guy. On some level that's worth the price because I would buy this pedal on that basis alone. It's perfect; both always there, and never there, modern and classic at the same time. I set the vibe knob to about 10-11 o'clock and the speed & intensity closer to 9 o'clock. Triads on the E thru G strings sound glorious here. The phaser is fine, but I'm not a phaser guy. Univibe is my phaser.

But for a premium price, a premium overdrive is the expectation. Not sure what happened here, but I haven't found any tones with the gain past noon that I like, either standing alone or stacked. The switcher function on the pedal helps, but in the end, everything starting around 11 o'clock on the gain produces this really tinny timbre that sounds like the signal's been run through a drawer full of cheap silverware. I tried single coil and humbucker guitars on multiple amps. Both drive modes produced a very narrow useable range, and the tones that were in that range were pretty disappointing. I could imagine it being used as a temp mix-cutter-througher on leads in a live gig, but have not yet had that chance to test that.

In summary: Eventide is known for their diffusion and modulation effects, not overdrive, and it really shows on this pedal. The vibe function is outstanding, perhaps best-in-class. The drive needs to be re-thought from the ground up; there's nothing special here withing the disappointing, narrowly useable range of tinny gain.
Music background: Guitarist since 1980. Home producer since yesterday.

There are studio engineers at Sweetwater who personally remember when Eventide changed the game with their affordable digital processing. Many of us still own Eventide DSP boxes that go back decades, and we use them all the time, because they're still awesome. That's one of the reasons we're always happy to talk to customers who come to Sweetwater looking for killer hardware effects. And it's not just engineers - you'll find Eventide delays, harmonizers, and more on our pedalboards, adding shimmer and shine to our guitars. It's little wonder Sweetwater is one of the biggest Eventide dealers out there, and our relationship with Eventide continues to grow, especially as they expand into new fields like plug-ins, 500 Series gear, and Eurorack synth systems.
