Jacob Collier's Alluring Acoustic-electric, now in the Academy Series

The signature sonic specifics and acoustic stylings of award-winning songwriter/producer Jacob Collier are ripe for all to enjoy. The Jacob Collier Signature Academy 22e takes notes from his JCSM-5 to deliver his renowned 5-string playing style to Taylor’s Academy Series. Tuned to DAEAD, just like Jacob prefers, this guitar gifts newcomers and veterans alike an enticing voice and unique tonal palette for a kind of expression unlike anything in your current guitar collection. Sweetwater acoustic players are quick to note the additional comfort provided by the slimmer 5-string neck, along with the reduced scale length. A solid walnut top and layered walnut back and sides produce a bright, clear tone that also delivers formidable body and projection, allowing the Jacob Collier Signature 22e to tackle a wide range of styles and genres. Finally, when it’s time to make your way up onstage, the built-in Fishman Presys VT electronics effortlessly electrify your playing, authentically capturing the 22e’s rich unplugged tone.

Warm tone and crisp clarity

The Taylor Jacob Collier Academy 22e takes a rather sharp turn from the standard Academy formula, featuring an all-walnut body construction that produces a focused tone rich in both clarity and warmth. A solid walnut top reduces unwanted overtones and amplifies the powerfully defined midrange. Matching layered walnut sides complement the mid-forward walnut top with a sparkling high-end shimmer — ideal for strumming singer/songwriters looking for a beautiful backdrop for their vocals. Plus, the petite Grand Concert body size is a natural choice for fingerpickers of all styles, allowing each and every note you pluck to remain clear, present, and true.

Comfort now, not later

The Academy series not only boasts legendary Taylor quality, but it is also packed with subtle perks for an enhanced playing experience. Helpful touches include the built-in armrest, which softens the contact point between your arm and the guitar for more relaxed playing; light-gauge strings; and a slightly shortened scale that makes notes and chords easier to hold without fatigue. These bold touches connect your fingertips to the music and will keep you playing on.

Stage-ready Fishman electronics

Serving up superb stage sound is standard with the Jacob Collier Academy 22e Studio’s onboard Fishman Sonitone preamp system. Via a carefully placed Fishman Presys VT piezo pickup, the Academy 22e’s electronics provide an excellent pathway to authentic, projective tone, all of which can be easily manipulated through the preamp’s built-in volume and tone controls. Plug into your amplification system, dial in your preferred tone, and the stage is yours.

Reviews

5-String is different.. but worth the risk!
This guitar is a gem! I've had it for about two months. Putting the 5-string aspect aside for a moment, the build quality, setup, playability, etc. are everything you can expect from a Taylor Academy. Not the most exquisite or luxurious materials, but everything just works like it is supposed to. It sounds good unplugged, the Fishman system is plenty adequate, the guitar is comfortable to play, and looks very nice! It came set up very well from Sweetwater. Is it a Taylor 800 or 900 series? No, but it's nice priced like them either! Like all of the Taylor Academy guitars, you get incredible bang for the buck.

As for the 5-string concept? I love it! I wasn't sure about it - seemed like a risk. Would I regret buying a guitar for just a few songs? I enjoy Jacob Collier's music and I sometimes playing in alternate tunings. I was considering buying another acoustic just to keep one in standard tuning and another in alternates, but took the leap and went with the 5-string instead. I'm happy with that choice!

It takes a bit of getting used to; the string spacing is wider (5 strings on the same neck and fingerboard as a 6 string). I bounce between DAEAE and DAEAD - both use similar fingering for chord voicing. Once my brain got used to the finger patterns, I actually found it to be super intuitive. It's very easy to use 3-4 finger patterns, slide them up and down the neck, and get a bunch of nice chord voicing. In addition to Jacob's Little Blue and his whole "The Light for Days" album, I find myself playing all kinds of songs.

Bottom line: I'm very happy with this guitar. I find myself reaching for this guitar a whole bunch, enjoy playing it, enjoy hearing it, and enjoy finding new ways to play chords and songs with it.
Great Guitar!
5 string guitar was quite the leap but glad I made it. Is it versatile for everything? No….buy this guitar if you want to expand your sound, learn some new shapes, and dive into the world of Jacob Collier. It is so fun to play and is setup great! If I'm not careful I find myself defaulting to think like a 5 string even when I'm playing my standard 6 string guitar!
