At Sweetwater, one of the things we pride ourselves on is offering an exceptional selection of many different types of instruments.
We strive to ensure our inventory goes beyond merely what’s most popular or sells the most. Our selection of acoustic stringed instruments demonstrates this commitment. We’ve sought out high quality, affordable instruments from yesteryear, as well as some modern updates of traditional orchestra instruments. If you’re looking for something a little different for your acoustic instrument collection, we have a treat for you.
One classic instrument that is making a comeback lately is the mountain dulcimer. These are commonly associated with very traditional folk and country forms, but they are gaining use in ingeniously non-traditional ways. They come with solid tops made of great tonewoods like mahogany and spruce, with rock maple bodies. You also have your choice of beautiful light or dark satin finishes.
A great way to add some low tone to your acoustic ensemble is with an 8-string baritone or a 4-string acoustic bass guitar. These have a natural, warm tone that can add the perfect amount of earthiness to the sound of your string group. They come with beautiful tops of mahogany or spruce, backs and sides in a variety of tonewoods, and your choice of rosewood or ebony fingerboards. We also carry 4-string tenor guitars, whose popularity has been rising lately. They’re distinct from other 4-string instruments in that their tone matches a guitar rather than that of a smaller instrument like a ukelele, yet they are easy to play and can provide excellent accompaniment for vocals. Plus, many of our tenor guitars come with upscale, tone-enhancing features like bone nut compensated saddles.
On the other side of the spectrum, check out our incredible electrified versions of traditional orchestra instruments. Our electric violins, cellos, and double basses are not just regular versions with pickups tacked on. These were designed with electrification in mind from the start, with the electronics built right in. These high-quality instruments offer excellent action, with all the feel of their acoustic counterparts but none of the maintenance challenges (such as tuning stability) that those instruments often pose. They feature ebony fingerboards, protective cases, and great finishes like amber burst, transparent red, and black. All eyes will be on you when you begin playing your electric violin or cello!
One of the most unusual items in our inventory is the 11-string inuk. This is an acoustic-electric instrument, but it’s similar in design to the ancient Persian instrument called the oud. The inuk has 5 sets of doubled strings of equal pitches, plus a single string that has the lowest pitch. The sound is something like a cross between the aforementioned oud and a deep-sounding mandolin, but it can be tuned just like a 6-string guitar (E-A-D-G-B-E). Our inuks come ready to plug in and jam with a pickup transducer under the saddle and a built in tuner.
