The Venerable J Bass

The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass takes a tried-and-true design and complements it with modern updates. The latest incarnation of a groundbreaking instrument, this electric bass guitar boasts a strong, lightweight, and stable roasted pine body, which pairs nicely with the classic punch provided by its V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Playing this J Bass is an absolute joy — its fast, comfortable Slim C-shaped neck, smooth rolled fingerboard, and sculpted neck heel are guaranteed to elevate your playing. Tapered-shaft tuners and a HiMass vintage bridge round out the American Pro II J Bass’s player-friendly features. The American Pro II Jazz Bass was designed from the ground up to offer you an ideal gigging and recording instrument.

One of the best necks in the business

Many bass players (including a bevy of us here at Sweetwater) believe that J Basses boast some of the best necks ever. And, thanks to its to-die-for Slim C shape, the American Pro II Jazz Bass's neck doesn’t disappoint. This ultra-comfortable profile fills your hand perfectly, while leaving enough wiggle room to facilitate effortless playability. The American Professional II Jazz Bass sports smooth rolled fingerboard edges and a Super-Natural satin finish, ensuring that this is one J Bass that you won’t want to put down. You’ll also appreciate the American Pro II J Bass's sculpted neck heel, which provides a comfortable feel and easy access to this electric bass guitar’s upper register.

Simple and effective electronics

Jazz Basses boast a 2-pickup setup, allowing you to pursue diverse tonal variations. The single-coils and the bass's 3-knob setup have been responsible for a wide array of legendary bass tones. The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass sticks close to its heritage with a duet of V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Designed by pickup guru Tim Shaw, these single-coil pickups exhibit the same warmth and clarity as their predecessor, while adding extra articulation and all the J Bass punch you can handle.

Player-friendly appointments

Though the American Professional II Jazz Bass looks and feels like a familiar friend, it's loaded with features that enhance both playability and tone. One of the most notable features is its 4-saddle HiMass vintage-style bridge. This bridge's rigid construction works in concert with this electric bass guitar’s bone nut to transfer more of the string's energy to the body of the instrument, enhancing its sustain and articulation. And the American Pro II Jazz Bass's tapered-shaft tuner design ensures you have optimal break angle and tension on your string posts.

Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass Features:

  • Tried-and-true J Bass design with player-friendly updates
  • 2 V-Mod II single-coil pickups offer classic punch with added articulation
  • Roasted pine body is strong, lightweight, and stable
  • Slim C neck profile with Super-Natural satin finish is fast and comfortable
  • Rolled fingerboard edges provide a smooth playing experience
  • Sculpted neck heel provides a comfortable feel and easy access to the upper register
  • Tapered-shaft tuners keep proper tension on your string posts
  • HiMass vintage bridge adds sustain and articulation

Reviews

An upgrade
While I've always been a Fender guitar guy, my first Fender bass - a 5 string Dimension bass - was very underwhelming so I sold it and continued playing my ancient Ibanez. I just decided to pull the trigger on this American Professional II Jazz Bass which arrived this morning. It's absolutely beautiful, feels and sounds fantastic and is a pleasure to play. Right out of the box without a setup from the team at Sweetwater this thing feels perfectly comfortable! I was able in 5 minutes to get every bass tone I could want out of the 2 V-Mod pickups. The only change I plan to make is swapping the black guard for a white one. I couldn't be happier. If you need a bass guitar and like the classic looks of the Jbass, go with this one. Thanks to my awesome sales engineer Greg Titzer who bends over backward to accommodate me. He is awesome!

Absolutely Amazing!
I have heard people say these American professional II's are no better than the MiM fenders and I seriously disagree. I have a MiM precision bass and while yes it's a good bass, it is not at the level of this bass. The fret work on this model is superb, the satin feel of the neck is slick and comfortable, the roasted pine body is just plain gorgeous and most importantly, the pick ups are KILLER SOUNDING!!!

This is the thing
What an upgrade coming from a MiM Mustang PJ. It's like the veil has been lifted. Every bass tone in my head is easily achievable with a couple of knob turns.

You don't have to work any magic with plugins or pedals, it just does the thing and does it in a way that makes you question why you had to ever try so hard before.

The neck is the best neck I've ever felt on ANY guitar, not just bass. The setup from Sweetwater was spot on, I have no notes. I'm also not thinking about how I'm going to "upgrade" it (bridge, pickups, wiring, etc.). It doesn't need it. It's absolutely perfect as-is.

Absolutely worth crossing the price chasm here. I'm actually astounded at how much better this is over the cheaper equivalents. Do yourself a favor and just buy this one and you'll be set for life.

The most versatile bass in the market.
I absolutely love this bass. I own quite a few high-end instruments — Tobias 4/5/6-strings and other boutique builds that cost significantly more — and while each of those basses has its own personality, this is the most versatile and complete bass I own.

The tone, the resonance, the punch, the warmth — it's all here. The dynamic range you can pull out of this bass is unreal. You can dig in and get that Marcus Miller-style aggressive clarity, or relax your right hand and get one of the sweetest, warmest slap tones I've ever heard. The articulation is expressive without ever feeling harsh. It sits beautifully in the mix, whether live or recording.

The neck feel is spectacular — honestly one of the most comfortable necks I've ever played. It's fast, smooth, and just feels "right," like the instrument is responding to you instead of the other way around.

And I need to say this clearly: the slap tone on this bass beats out every 70s Jazz Bass I've ever played — vintage included. It's got the brightness and snap you want, but with more control and body. You can shape the tone exactly where you want it.

The biggest surprise is how this bass is making me question why I even keep my other instruments. Not because they're bad — they're great — but because this American Pro II Jazz just covers everything. It's the definition of a go-to instrument.

I can't put it down
Fantastic
Absolutely incredible tone. Between the electronics and the wood the tone is just right. Whether you're using flats or roundwounds you will get a phenomenal sound from this instrument. Volume knobs are set up with circuitry so that as you decrease the volume the tone changes to a more mild sound. Turning the volume knobs all the way up creates a sharper brighter sound. If both pickups are turned up at the same level you get excellent noise canceling. Moreover you have a separate tone knob to further shape your sound. Action is easily set by adjusting the truss and the height of the bridge saddles.
