Pack your 500 Series rack with Classic Neve EQ

The Rupert Neve Designs 551 is a 3-band, custom-tapped inductor EQ inspired by classic Neve console equalizers. The low-frequency band is revered for its creamy, rich bass. Unlike Rupert's vintage designs, however, the 551's LF band may be used in either a peak or shelf mode to give you amazing control over the punch and girth of your low end. The 551's inductor midrange band is perfect for sweetening vocals and instruments while nudging them forward in your mix. For those problematic frequencies, the mid band's proportional-Q response is just what the doctor ordered. The high-frequency band is a hybrid vintage/modern design that blends classic inductor circuitry with capacitor-based topologies to give you vintage sound with enhanced control.

Low-feedback, Class A discrete electronics make the difference

Rupert Neve Designs uses low-feedback, Class A discrete electronics in each EQ section of the 551, and these make a vital contribution to the equalizer's overall sound. And while these design elements are very much "vintage Neve," the 551 also leverages contemporary components and techniques that weren't possible back in the day, giving you the best of old and new.

The magical sound of Neve

Rupert Neve is an audio legend whose electronics designs defined the golden age of analog. Those of us who have had the privilege of working on a Neve 8078 or its predecessors can attest to the fact that Neve's Series 80 consoles were indeed the pinnacle of hand-wired analog mixing desks. Mr. Neve has remained at the forefront of audio-circuit innovation for over half a century, and his current company, Rupert Neve Designs, continues to advance the state of the art with cutting-edge products that sound incredible and intelligently address the challenges of the digital age. If you're still not quite sure what the fuss is all about, check out Dave Grohl's documentary, "Sound City."

ANYTHING RUPERT IS A GREAT THING
I love the sound of this EQ. I use it with heavy hands, Like extreme settings. Big boost and cuts. No fear. Because no matter how you use this thing. It will sound great. It's only going to set you back...but what the hell is...doing sitting in your bank account anyways. Go buy the thing.

Awesome EQ
Rupert Neve said: The EQ is only for correction.

Keeping those words or wisdom in mind, I try to be subtle with this EQ and only boost slightly here and there on certain frequencies of certain instruments. The only instrument I ever cut the mids on is harmonica to keep it from sounding harsh.
I put this EQ at the end of the channel strip, after the compressor. The only time I put it before the compressor is when I'm working with lows end stuff like kick drum or electric bass.

Whatever fancy, internal circuitry is in this module, I'm sure you'll be happy with the end result.

Using on Shelford
Currently using this on the Shelford and it is absolutely incredible!
JUST BUY IT!!
There is a reason this unit has no rating under five stars. With five knobs the EQ sound possibilities are endless!! It made my vocals go from someone who sounds like they recorded at home and EQ'd with basic plugins, to someone who recorded a session at a professional studio and got mixed by a professional mixer.
Analog Warmth Meets Versatility: Why the Rupert Neve 551 Stands Out

I'd recommend the Rupert Neve 551 to anyone serious about elevating their sound. After working with a range of hardware and software EQs, this one stood out in ways that felt substantial and genuinely impactful.

My Experience with Plug-ins

When it comes to EQ plug-ins, a few issues consistently come up. First, there's the lack of a tactile experience. Adjusting an analog EQ is a completely different experience from clicking a mouse or using an analog-styled plug-in controller, which can feel a bit detached and awkward compared to turning a knob on actual gear.

Then there's the sound itself. Plug-ins, even the good ones, tend to sound a bit clinical. They might technically recreate the frequency response, but they often miss the warmth and subtle harmonic richness that hardware adds through natural analog saturation and distortion. Finally, put side by side, plug-ins usually lack the dimension that an analog piece of gear can bring.

What I Was Looking For

I needed an equalizer that could handle everything from drums to guitars to vocals—a true all-rounder. Many EQs sound great on certain instruments but fall short on others. It also had to be smooth across the entire frequency spectrum, not just in one range, without any brittleness or noise in the highs. And, importantly, I was looking for something under $ for a stereo pair.

Why I Chose the Rupert Neve 551

Living in Los Angeles gives me access to a range of rental gear, so I had the chance to compare a lot of options before landing on the RND 551. Right from the start, its sound and versatility really impressed me.

First, it shares a lot of the smooth, musical qualities I love in my 1073 preamp—it just sounds incredibly natural. There's no harshness, even when boosting the high end or pushing the mids; everything stays smooth and balanced.

Then, there's the EQ flexibility. The 551 feels like a Swiss Army knife for EQing:

• Lows: Offers precise control with both shelf and peak options, which add punch and depth.

• Mids: Sweetens vocals and instruments beautifully, staying clear and full even at extreme settings.

• Highs: Smooth and open, with an 8/16 kHz switch that's the perfect finishing touch for adding air and presence.

Price

At this price point, the 551 feels like a great investment considering what it offers in terms of quality and versatility.
