Windows 98 SE installation for the Audiophile USB

Make sure the Audiophile USB is NOT connected to the computer and no application is opened before beginning the installation!

Microsoft’s DirectX 8.1 needs to be installed on your Computer before beginning the driver installation for the M-Audio Audiophile USB. To determine the DirectX version installed on your computer, please click on “Start”, select “Run”, type “dxdiag” and click “OK”. Your DirectX Version is shown on this screen along with some additional information about your computer. If the DirectX Version is lower than 8.1, please go to http://www.microsoft.com and download/install DirectX 8.1 before continuing the driver installation.

The Windows98 driver is not yet included on the latest M-Audio Driver CD. Please download the driver from our webpage driverpage. In the field “Select Product”, select the “Audiophile USB”. In the field “OS”, select “Windows 98SE”. Click submit. Click on the Filename “Audiophile_154xx_web.exe” to download the driver. Make sure to save it to your desktop.

1) Double-click on “Audiophile_154xx_web.exe” on your Desktop to run the M-Audio Audiophile Setup program.

2) This wizard will guide you through the installation process. CAREFULLY READ the displayed instructions – click the “Next” button for each screen once you have read and understood the instructions.

3) Select if you want to “Enable digital CD audio for CD/DVD drives” and “Enable DMA transfer mode for CD/DVD drives”. The checkboxes need to be checked if you want play Audio CDs from your computer’s CD-ROM drive using the Audiophile USB. Click “Next”.

4) When prompted, connect the Audiophile USB to your computer and press the power button on it’s front panel.

5) Windows’ “Add New Hardware Wizard” will come up and tell you that “The wizard searches for new drivers for: “USB Compostive Device (…possibly you will see another file name here)”. The Audiophile USB installer you ran in Step 1 of this guide prepared all the necessary files, so you won’t have to change any settings in the process of running the “Add New Hardware Wizard”. Just click “Next” on any of the displayed screens.

6) Click “Finish” when the wizard tells you that “Windows has finished installing the software that your new hardware device requires”.

7) (*) Windows will now recognize the Audiophile USB and copy the driver files to the right locations. Even if it might look like the computer has finished this task, please wait at least 2 minutes before you continue, since it might still copy files in the background – invisible to you. Once you’re sure it’s done, move on to Step 8 of this guide.

8) Being back to the “M-Audiophile USB Installed Sucessfully” screen, click “Next” to complete the installation.

9) Unless you chose to modify the settings for your CD-ROM/DVD drive in Step 7 of this guide, you can click “Finish” to start using the Audiophile USB. If you did modify the settings, you will be asked to restart the computer. Click “Finish” and your computer will restart automatically and the Audiophile USB will be ready to be used once the Computer is started up again.

(*) Depending on what has been previously installed on your computer, you might get a message that looks something like this:

——Version Conflict: A file being copied is older than the file currently on your computer. It is ——-recommended that you keep your existing file.

——File name: ksuser.dll, stream.sys, (possibly some additional filenames)

——Description: User CSA Library

——Your version: 4.90.3000.400

——Do you want to keep this file? Yes/No

Make sure you select “No” in every one of these Dialogs. This will cause the existing file to be overwritten. This is necessary to ensure the consistency and compatibility of all files that are installed with the Audiophile USB.
