How can I program the control surface of the Roland Studiopack (VM3100) into Cakewalk Sonar?

These are the directions to do this in Sonar 2.0 (XL or standard).

1. Go to Options – Control Surfaces.

2. Remove any control surfaces listed that you are not using (with the blue X).

3. Click the yellow + (Add) and select Cakewalk Generic Surface, and the in and out ports as the Midi In / Out Roland RPC-1.

4. Click OK, then Close.

5. Make sure your Roland mixer is in Midi Ch mode (Midi Ch button is red).

6. Go to Tools – Cakewalk Generic Surface.

7. Now, you will click the radio button next to the function you wish to program. Say, for example, we want to program Play.

8. Now press the appropriate button or move the fader on the mixer which corresponds to the selected function (remember, this is for you to use, so feel free to program buttons as you wish, you do not have to use the marked function on the mixer). In the case of programming Play, push the play button on the mixer.

9. After you have told Sonar what button you are dealing with, press the Learn button in the top-right hand side of the window. This tells Cakewalk to assign the last action to the selected function.

10. Wash, rinse, Repeat steps 7-9 as desired. Please note some functions may be more difficult to obtain; i.e. pan because there is one knob to be shared by all channels. Also note, some buttons do not send MIDI messages, and thus cannot be used with Sonar. i.e. arrow buttons, bank 1-8, shift, no/yes.

11. It is recommended to save your customized surface (the disk icon next to presets on the top).
