MTPAVUSB constantly loses contact w/computer. clockworks freezes on launch or mouse locks up. MTPAV loses ability to route midi (eg from port 1 to port 2). updated USB driver, freemidi 1.41, Clockworks 1.07 MTPAVUSB – USB Problems on Mac. Loss of Communication, Crashes, Freezes…

MOTU has experienced the USB lock ups on the B&W G3s, but have been able to correct these problems with the following suggestions.

First, you’ll need to be at a minimum of OS 8.6 (OS9.1 currently recommended) to run USB interfaces with FreeMIDI.

Make sure you have the latest version of FreeMIDI (currently, 1.46)

Reset the MTPAV by pressing and holding the PANIC button, while you turn the unit ON. This restores the MTPAV to factory settings *(erases and user data).

Make sure that you have all of the software updates for the G3 or G4. Check Apple System profiler (in your apple menu) for ROM versions. Then compare to latest rom versions at http://asu.info.apple.com

Try replacing or removing USB devices from the USB bus. If you have a Hub, try connecting the MIDI interface directly to the Mac. If you have a USB scanner, a hub, a USB QuickCam , etc, remove them and start small. Connect only the Keyboard/Mouse and MIDI interface. If you still encounter a problem, try substituting an ADB keyboard if possible.

Try replacing cables. If you are using the USB extension cable that came with the G3, remove it and connect the keyboard directly. Try a different USB cable for the MIDI interface.

Lastly, look for offending extensions, try zapping PRAM, and rebuild the Desktop. In one recent unrelated case, a user was having a problem getting his MIDI interface to scan in FreeMIDI. We tried the normal procedures, but in the end, running off a cleanly installed OS on a different partition was the fix. There was just something funky in the
system that we could not find.
