Moog Muse Firmware Update
Even though the Moog Muse is an analog synthesizer, it has digitally-controlled functions. From time to time Moog will provide a firmware update which will fix bugs and provide new features. Let’s explain how to update your Muse.

Check the Firmware Version in Your Moog Muse
- Press the Menu button in the Programmer section to open the Global Settings page. This will display “VERSION” followed by a number, for example “Version 1.1.” Take note of it.
- On your Mac or Windows PC, go to the Moog Music website’s Muse product page.
- On the page, you’ll see the firmware download link, for example “Download Firmware v1.2.0.”
If the version on the product page is higher than that on your Muse, then you need to update the firmware. If not, you’re good.
While you are on the Muse product page, click Download the Muse Manual to make sure you have the newest version.
Download the New Firmware to Your Computer
If you need to update:
- On your Mac or Windows PC, on the Moog Music website’s Muse product page, click Download Firmware.
- Go to your Downloads folder and you’ll see a Moog Muse Firmware document ending in .zip. Open the .zip file. If you need help, here is Sweetwater’s instructions.
- In the folder created, you’ll see two files. The one named moog-muse-firmware.bin is the actual firmware file you will transfer to your Moog Muse.
You should also see a PDF firmware release notes file with instructions on performing the update. Keep this handy, as it explains the new features that you can use after the firmware is installed. The guide will also have instructions on downloading the latest Muse factory presets for use with the new firmware.
Upload the New Firmware to Your Muse
- Power off the Muse.
- Connect your Muse to your Mac or Windows PC. Connect a USB data cable to the USB-B port on the back of the Muse. You may need a USB-C adapter dongle if your computer requires it.
- On the Muse, hold down the Select encoder knob (to the left of the display screen) while turning on the power. Hold the Select encoder down until the display screen shows “Disk Mode.”
CAUTION: If you are on Windows, your computer may display an error message “There is a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it.” Do not accept this prompt; it may cause issues with your Muse that will require you to send it back to the factory for service. Wait a minute until the prompt goes away, or decline the prompt by clicking “Continue without scanning.”
If you are on Mac, you may see a dialog “Allow this accessory to connect?” Click Allow.
In the Finder on Mac, or the Desktop/File Explorer on Windows, you will see a new external disk drive icon named MOOG_MUSE.
Open this directory, and you will see three folders:
- firmware
- library
- util
Within the firmware folder is a file named moog-muse-firmware.bin.
The new firmware file in your computer’s Download folder has the same name.
To upload the firmware:
- Go to your Downloads folder, to the Moog Muse Firmware folder within, and find the new moog-muse-firmware.bin file.
- Drag this file to the firmware folder on the MOOG_MUSE drive.
- When prompted, choose Replace so that the new file replaces the old file of the same name. Wait for the file to be copied. Do not place any other files in the firmware folder.
Start the Firmware Update Process
In the Mac Finder or Windows File Explorer, use the Eject command. Here are Sweetwater’s instructions on how to eject a drive on Windows and Mac. Do not disconnect the USB cable at this time.
- Look at the display screen on your Muse. Wait until the screen displays “Disk mode session ended.”
- Turn off the power switch on the back of the Muse. Wait several seconds.
- Turn the power back on. Wait for the Muse to boot up. On the display you will see a Loading indicator. This will take about a minute.
Wait for the Muse to finish booting up normally. The update should be complete.
To confirm that the update has taken place, press the Menu button and read the Version number on the Global Settings page. The version number should match that of the update file you downloaded from the website.
Now go to the PDF file in your original download and follow the instructions to put the Muse into Disk Mode again and update the presets in the library folder.
