Interfacing a Mic Preamp Into A Tascam DA-38
From inSync reader DJ: “I’m wondering how I could interface a fairly decent mic preamp (ART MPA or Aphex model 107) into my Tascam DA-38. The only +4 dBu input on the DA-38 is a D-sub connection. Is there some type of adapter cable available? Or would I have to use the unbalanced -10 dBV inputs on the DA-38?” Thanks for the questions, DJ! If your mic preamp has a +4 output, our recommendation is to use the +4 inputs on the DA-38. Several companies manufacture cables that go from D-sub (DB25) connector to your choice of bare wire (for soldering to patch bays), balanced 1/4″, or XLR connectors. You will probably be unhappy with the results of running the preamp’s +4 out straight into the -10 inputs on the multitrack, but you could use a level matching amplifier, like Aphex’ Model 124A or dbx 1024, to connect the +4 outs of the preamp to the -10 ins of the DA-38.
