How Does a Bluetooth Speaker Work?
In this guide, we will talk about what a Bluetooth speaker is, how Bluetooth speakers work, and also provide you with some tips and tricks along the way! Let’s get started.
What Is a Bluetooth Speaker?
Bluetooth speakers provide high-definition audio no matter where you are. They also have great battery life (six to 10 hours on average), so you can keep the music going all day long.
Bluetooth speakers are the preferred choice for those who want to cut the wire but still want to maintain high-quality audio. While these speakers are primarily used for just casually listening to music at home, there are larger ones that can pack a punch, making them perfect for parties or karaoke. Some are even waterproof, which means you can enjoy music while you’re hanging out around the pool!
How Does a Bluetooth Speaker Work?
Bluetooth speakers work by using short-range radio waves (RF) to transmit data to and from your Bluetooth-enabled device (such as a smartphone, a tablet, or a computer).
Your Bluetooth-enabled device will turn the audio from your phone or computer into 1s and 0s and send it to your Bluetooth speaker (analog to digital, sometimes referred to as A/D). Once that digital signal is received, the built-in Bluetooth receiver will decode that data and convert it back into an analog format (digital to analog, sometimes referred to as D/A or DAC). It will then be amplified through your speaker.

Bluetooth Profiles
Every Bluetooth device uses a certain profile (sets of protocol). These profiles determine the type of Bluetooth device and will determine if it will show up as a usable Bluetooth device on a specific device.
Let’s break it down: Bluetooth game controllers, Bluetooth headsets, and Bluetooth speakers all use different Bluetooth profiles. If your device does not support a specific Bluetooth profile, then it won’t be recognized and won’t show up when you scan for nearby Bluetooth devices.
Bluetooth speakers use the A2DP profile (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), which is designed specifically for wirelessly transferring high-quality audio. This one big reason why Bluetooth speakers sound good!
What About Wi-Fi Speakers?
You may see some speakers marketed as Wi-Fi speakers. While wireless speakers and Bluetooth speakers have the same way of connecting (wireless connectivity to your device), there is one big difference: Bluetooth speakers offer a direct (one-to-one) connection to your speaker, whereas wireless speakers rely on a Wi-Fi network router. While Wi-Fi speakers may provide more clarity due to their capability of streaming more data, they can also be bulkier! So, while Wi-Fi speakers do allow you to cut the cord, you’ll still be tied to the wireless router and won’t be able to take them everywhere you go.
Where to Place a Bluetooth Speaker
As we mentioned, Bluetooth speakers can be taken pretty much anywhere. Just like any other wireless device, however, signal becomes a little spotty if the Bluetooth speaker is in another room as your device, as radio waves have difficulty penetrating through hard surfaces, especially wood and concrete. So, when placing your Bluetooth speaker, try to make sure that there’s a direct line of sight between it and the device you’re pairing it with (phone, computer, tablet, etc.).
Also, your Bluetooth speaker will often have a range limit of 20–40 feet. This varies, however, so check out your Bluetooth speaker’s owner’s manual to find the specific distance it’s capable of.

The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off.
