FastTrack Pro and FastTrack USB show up as “USB Audio Device” in Windows XP.

This is a troubleshooting guide for the Fast Track USB under Windows XP*. This tutorial is for users who have installed the latest Fast Track USB driver and are experiencing the following problems:
* You are unable select the M-Audio Fast Track as a record or playback device in your recording software
* You are getting error messages indicating the Fast Track is not connected (even when it is in fact connected)
* You are getting error messages indicating that no ASIO driver is found; or if there are problems initializing the ASIO driver

1. The first step is to check the Windows Device Manager to see if your Fast Track is recognized by Windows. To get to your Device Manager, go to Start>Run and type devmgmt.msc and click OK.

The Device Manager window will open.

2. Click the + next to the category Sound, video, and game controllers to open it.

If you see M-Audio Fast Track USB, Skip ahead to Step 9.

If you see M-Audio Fast Track (without USB), you should reinstall the latest drivers.

Does the M-Audio Fast Track appear with a yellow exclamation point (!), a yellow question mark (?), or do you see USB Audio Device?

If so, Right Click on USB Audio Device (or the M-Audio listing w/ a yellow mark) and select Update Driver.

3. The Hardware Update Wizard window will appear. Select No, not at this time and click Next.

*This first windows may not appear for some users

4. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next.

5. Select Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install. and click Next.

6. If you are able to, select the Model M-Audio Fast Track USB, click Next and go to Step 7.

If the Model M-Audio Fast Track appears WITHOUT USB, click Cancel, then reinstall the latest drivers.

If the only Model in this window is USB Audio Device, click Cancel, then reinstall the latest drivers.

7. The Wizard will begin copying the drivers for M-Audio Fast Track USB and you may be notified that the driver being installed has not passed Windows Logo Testing. Click “Continue Anyway” to proceed with the installation.

8. Click Finish on the last page of the Update Wizard.

Now the Device Manager should recognize M-Audio Fast Track USB with no yellow marks.

If you see M-Audio Fast Track USB, but the entry is accompanied by yellow marks, or if you received any error messages from the Hardware Update Wizard, you should reinstall the latest drivers.

With the drivers installed, the next step is to verify that the M-Audio Fast Track USB Control Panel recognizes that the Fast Track USB is in fact connected.

9. Open the M-Audio Fast Track USB control panel Properties by right-clicking on the M-Audio icon in the System Tray. The Fast Track USB control panel can also be accessed from the Windows Control Panel when Classic View is enabled. If the Control Panel is in Category View, click Switch to Classic View on the left-hand side.

If you see “connected” in the bottom left corner of the Fast Track USB Properties window, everything is installed correctly and your Fast Track USB is ready to serve as an Audio interface for your computer and recording software.

In the rare event that the control panel shows “not connected” after carefully following the steps above, this may be due to a more complex system resource conflict. In these situations, we recommend you contact Tech Support for further assistance.
