How do I assign an instrument definition in Cakewalk or Sonar?

1. Go to Options – Instruments.
2. If your instrument is listed on the right, skip to step 8
3. Click Define and then Import.
4. Find the c:\program files\cakewalk\cakewalk pro audio\sample content or c:\program files\cakewalk\sonar\sample content folder.
5. Select the manufacturer of your instrument and click Open.
6. Select the model(s) and hit OK.
7. Click Close, and your instrument should be listed at the right.
8. You must now let Cakewalk/Sonar know where your instrument is connected. At the left are all your output ports, each with 16 channels listed as Output Port X / Midi channel. Click on the desired port with / 1 at the end. You can either click-drag the highlighted blue section to channel 16 or hold shift while clicking channel 16. This selects in blue all 16 midi channels of this port.
9. Click your instrument on the right to make the assignment. Now notice a line drawn from the midi port/channel at the left to the instrument at the right. Hit OK.
10. Now when you select an input (source), and output (port), and a midi channel, your input port will change to the assigned instrument and you will be able to utilize the bank and patch selectors for your instrument.

If no instrument is listed as a direct match, you could choose a close match, create your own (see our other article about creating your own instrument definitions), or check the availability for a download at ftp://ftp.cakewalk.com/pub/InstrumentDefinitions/.
