A Modestly Priced, Reference-level Nearfield

KRK worked with hundreds of engineers and producers to get the response right for its V4 Series 4 monitors. The key ingredients were a ported cast-aluminum/MDF enclosure and a complement of custom Kevlar drivers: a 4" woven woofer and 1" dome tweeter that are, together, flat from 58Hz to 19Khz (±3dB). This full, flat response makes KRK V4 Series 4s a serious budget option for mixing, mastering, and all demanding listening applications.

KRK V4 Series 4 monitors: not just a pretty face

Under the hood, KRK's dual Class D amplifiers deliver 85 watts to the drivers for an impressive 110dB SPL. Its 14 user-selectable EQ settings allow you to overcome shortcomings in your listening environment. Other features that impressed us at Sweetwater include a friction-lock Neutrik connector for XLR or TRS cables, a universal threaded mounting bracket, a precise 7-way attenuation switch for level matching, and an EVA foam pad for acoustic isolation.

Reviews

Not Right Away
These KRK V4 S4 are not at all forgiving for stereo hifi use, however they do vastly improve after a few days, well two or three weeks really, getting run in for several hours a day. In the first week I had to cut everything on the presets that could be cut, 200hz, 3.5khz & 10khz, to make them bearable to listen to, compared to my smooth, well worn in JBL LSR305 speakers, which as I said are much smoother sounding. However the JBL are not as detailed as these KRK. Now about 4 weeks in, using the V4 S4, I've had them set flat for the past couple of weeks. The harsh has worn away, but still they offer very noticeable improvement in clarity & detail over the much cheaper JBL in the relatively same spot, well away from any wall.
Of note I have the KRK level down at -3 & still it was noticeably louder than the JBL which I usually ran at 12 o'clock on their gain, but would go up 2 notches, to maybe 1 o'clock. In either case I never felt they were lacking in volume, whereas the KRK seemed so loud, even at -3db that I had to turn up the subwoofer. That was also a JBL LSR310. Unfortunately it would bottom out on some material that was very bass heavy. That led me to purchase the KRK s12.4 sub, which indeed seems to be a better match, set at 3 o'clock with the S4 V4 speakers at 80hz HP set at -3db. No more bottoming out on bass heavy material. The S4 V4 absolutely need a sub for normal listening enjoyment. They can not defy physics, but they do offer a full bodied presentation. They do throw a very nice big bubble of soundstage with some good depth to it. They offer a great amount of detail with absolute clarity. They do remain clear with highly demanding dynamic shifts. That is all really. I run mine upside down, very slightly toed in, very slightly. They're upside down being that they're on tall speaker stands which puts the tweeter on about the same plane as my ears.

Early doors, but, fantastic after tweaks.
These are set up where there were JBL LSR305. I'm still using the JBL LSR310 sub, which leads me to the first tweak. The sub's gain was at 12 o'clock which was in perfect balance with the 305 speaker level at 12 o'clock. The V4S4 overpowered the sub, so I turned the speakers down as low as they go. Still they overpowered the JBL sub. I turned the sub up 2 notches. This was a bit better, but still the tiny KRK speakers overpowered the sub just a tad. Next I was not liking the sound of the speakers, arriving set flat. They were rather bright, if not a bit harsh, & slightly thin sounding. Tweak 2 I put the 3db boost at 75hz on & the 1db cut at 3.5khz. That vastly improved the sound very much to my liking. 3rd tweak I bumped the sub up 1 more notch & the listening experience is all that I had hoped it would be, having spent over 3 times what the JBL 305's cost. My quite large room is very well treated to deter standing waves & room nodes though not with any professional products. These KRK V4S4 get plenty loud & offer substantial dynamic contrast to fill my ears & my heart with joy at my listening position. It is my theory that smaller speakers as these offer better stereo image/soundstage. Lastly these speakers are smaller than the 305s but are substantially heavier. They're very solid, & seemingly inert cabinets. The clarity remains in the subtle parts & even in the crescendos. They do not lose their grip of clarity on the complex parts. The sub is handling 80hz low pass. I would not use these without a sub. I want to get the matching KRK sub at a later date, the 12" one. That is all.
KRK V4 S4 Rock!
These speakers sound so full and clear! They blew me away. I really wasn't expecting this full of a sound from such compact speakers. Extensive controls on the back allow for great customization.
Small speakers that sound big
As soon as I turned these on, I was blown away by the clarity and fullness of the sound. They sound so much bigger than they look and help me mix accurately.
Wouldn't go back
Been using these about 2 years now and I like them much better than my last pair of (far more expensive) JBLs. They are clean and I like having the bass on the front. THE MAIN THING I've noticed is when I've mixed on other speakers it didn't sound the same on little earbuds or in the car but with these I can trust my mix. They reduced my anxiety.
