A Dozen Inspiring Stereo Delays with 30-second Looper

The Strymon TimeLine's lush and inspiring delays and simple control layout may make you want to leave your valuable and vintage pedals at home. The TimeLine features 12 delay machines with dedicated hardware controls for real-time tweaking, along with 200 factory presets for instant inspiration. Dial in a delay you like, edit it, then save and name it. Filter and Grit knobs let you control the shape and distortion artifacts of repeats for sounds that range from studio clean to vintage analog to early digital. The TimeLine's onboard stereo looper records up to 30 seconds of audio for you to jam over for live performances or use to experiment with new delay effects.

12 delay machines with dedicated controls and 200 presets for a wide range of sounds

Each delay type in the Strymon TimeLine is fully independent and unique. Delays modeled after analog bucket brigade pedals and tape echo machines, along with unique filtered synth-y delays and bit-crushed transistor delays, provide a comprehensive experience that will make tone tweakers smile. But if you're the type of player who wants to dive in, find a sound, and roll with it, the TimeLine's 200 factory presets cover a wide range of ground from blues to metal to experimental.

30-second looper lets you jam over parts or experiment with delays

The TimeLine's stereo looper is a powerful stage performance tool. It's also a handy creative tool for workshopping melodies, harmonies, and delay tones. Record a part up to 30 seconds in length, loop it, then play over top of it. The TimeLine's looper lets you select its place in the signal chain, either before or after delay effects.

Long time deciding

I took over a year to decide which delay pedal I wanted. I like Strymon tones and construction but due to the price of their stuff I evaluate as critically as I can without the ability to audition the actual pedal. I was interested in the iconic Bucket brigade effect and the ability to do dotted eight notes delays. I wanted a pedal that could recreate the U2 type delays. I almost thought about acquiring separate delay pedals that each had the capability I wanted but then the monetary outlay was close to the Strymon or even more. After listening to sound samples of the Strymon from various sources across the internet I chose the Strymon. It does a lot. It's close enough to the sounds in my head that I'm happy with it. Learning how a pedal works is always a learning process. I'm getting used to how Strymon designs their operational characteristics and features. Having one pedal with a range of possibilities is perhaps simpler than learning how many different pedals work. At my level and expertise, getting close is instructive and satisfying. There is nothing that turns me off about the tonal characteristics of the Timeline so I'm good for now. Nothing bugs me about this pedal. It does what I want and offers many avenues for exploration so I'm good.

let's talk about the GOAT delay.....

I had one of these a few years back, they have been around 10-11 yrs now. It was the state of the art then and it would seem nothing really reinvents the wheel or improves upon this unit to any significantly groundbreaking tech. I made the usual mistake of selling off my Strymon stuff for the latest greatest (at the time) Fractal FX8 and thought that would forever solve my need for delay or reverb. Lost story, already too long, I go through gear at an amazing pace it seems and somehow. I changed everything again and constantly looked for the working musically usefully delay and reverb. Feature wise, fidelity, bandwidth, buffer impedance, on board presets, to need to have to use a PC or Cell editor, and downright great tones with so many options; it seems as though new units may approach the GOAT TimeLine, but, it is not going to really out do it. Most fail to attain an "as good" comparison when you get right down to it.
Some major things for me: above all I am sick to death of knob dial delays, sick of tap tempo and adjust by ear, neither are the same twice. If you save the magic timing, hell on you if you have to redo it.
If I want a 335ms or a 610ms delay that is what I want, dead on. Plus, I also have the stupid knob turn-tap thing if I need it! Very few delay units have a ms readout now a days much less w the iconic quality, utterly ease of use, deep param adjust and very musically useful delays. I've had just about 80% of most stuff and I am back for my 2nd TimeLine and it's a keeper no matter what. I picked the TimeLine and the Flint as my delay and reverb/trem of choice. Give me an ms delay readout or it does not get up to bat.

Oh...

After buying and using numerous delay pedals - some pretty darn nice - I understand why I have seen the Timeline on so many pedalboards; It sounds awesome. There seems to be an extra depth to this delay that is hard to describe - sort of like that perfect "transparent" overdrive. Also, it's pretty darn easy to scroll around with your foot. The looper works great, and the whole thing works really well live. It's worth the extra $.
Music background: I get paid. Sometimes.

TimeLine

There's a reason this pedal is held by many (at least within the worship context) as the best delay pedal. It's fantastic and has way more than you'll ever use. An all-around great pedal for anyone to own.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Austin Gerali

I've used the Timeline for about 7 years on my pedalboard and I will never get rid of it. It is a staple on my board because if its incredible versatility and ease of use. Having a delay with 200 presets has immensely changed how I am able to play and the added benefit of being able to switch between those presets with 1 button and a MIDI controller has drastically improved the functionality of my board and sound. I would recommend the Timeline to any player who is looking to step up to the next level in delay performance and tone.
