Another Analog Gem from Dave Smith!

The Mopho desktop synth represents the most affordable way to tap into the analog magic of Dave Smith Instruments! The monophonic Mopho (MOnoPHOnic, get it?) measures a mere 7.5"x5" but it sounds much bigger than that! The 100% analog signal path consists of a pair of oscillators, a classic Curtis filter (switchable 2- or 4-pole), analog VCAs, envelope generators, and sub-octave generators, all of which come together to create a streamlined synth reminiscent of the classic Prophet. Looking for classic analog synth sound on a budget? Check out the Mopho!

What is it?

Mopho is a compact, affordable, and incredibly powerful monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is identical to a single voice of the Prophet '08, but with a couple of unique twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. Dave Smith Instruments added two sub-octave generators - one per oscillator - for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme "skronk."

The Push It button is a manual trigger that lets you play a specific note or latch notes and sequences on. It can also step through a sequence to play short melodic lines without a keyboard. Of course, Mopho can also be used with a MIDI controller or external sequencer. Mopho is fully programmable and all the parameters can be tweaked from the front panel. The four Assignable Parameters controls are assignable per program for optimum performance control. A free editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming. (And, if you already have a Prophet '08, most of Mopho's parameters can be controlled from the Prophet's front panel via MIDI!)

Who's it for?

Mopho is perfect for people who want to learn the ins and outs of real analog synthesis without spending a bundle, DJs looking to add some old school sonic spice to their setups, and musicians who will appreciate a great-sounding, very portable mono synth. In short, anyone can quickly and easily tap into the legendary analog sound of Dave Smith Instruments with this extremely affordable desktop module!

How many of us have used only software synths and never touched a real analog synth? When you think analog synth, you generally think of expensive panels full of switches and dials... something that you would never get your hands on unless there was one set up in a music store. Worry not, because Dave Smith Instruments has come to rescue you from the digital doldrums. The Mopho (short for MonoPhonic) has a 100% analog signal path that is a direct descendant of a single voice of the DSI Prophet 08. It comes with 384 built-in programs, which are fully customizable and programmable, just by turning any of the control knobs on the surface. I spent several hours trying out different programs, and adjusting each and every control. Within just one program, I produced an amazing variety of sounds. I also loved the built-in arpeggiator and sequencer, especially when I plugged in my MIDI controller keyboard and began to play with the pitch and mod wheels. Don't have a keyboard? There's a handy little "Push It!" switch on the front that triggers notes and latches on sequences. You can have plenty of fun with just this box and some headphones. If you have an external source of audio, you can also use the Mopho to process it. I tried out a guitar with some interesting results. If you're looking to score some great analog synth sounds contained in a highly portable (and affordable!) box, look no further than the little Mopho.
