Second-gen 3-way Coaxial Monitor from Kali Audio

Kali Audio's IN-8 has been heralded as one of the most accurate powered studio monitors in its price range, and the second-wave version ups the ante with a new amplifier platform, improved transducers, and an upgraded cabinet. The IN-8 V2 uncovers every detail in your mix — it's brutally honest. Nothing is boosted or attenuated to mask flaws or spice up its sound, so what you hear is what you get. In addition to a ruler-flat frequency response, the IN-8 V2 exhibits negligible levels of distortion, ample headroom, and impressive low-end extension for an 8-inch speaker. This speaker's coaxial design boasts directivity that surpasses any non-coaxial speaker, enveloping your entire room in a uniform soundstage. Its low-noise port tube yields clean, punchy bass. And thanks to its boundary compensation EQ, it sounds great in a myriad of environments. The IN-8 V2 includes an integrated Class D power amp, along with balanced XLR and TRS inputs, and an unbalanced RCA input. Moreover, the IN-8 V2 is wall- and ceiling-mountable, enabling you to deploy it wherever you need it in your studio — a must for mixing in immersive formats like Dolby Atmos. No matter how you use it, the Kali Audio IN-8 V2 is a studio monitor that you can trust.

Transparent sound reproduction

The IN-8 V2 offers ultra-transparent sound reproduction, enabling you to hear every detail of your mix. This starts with an exceptionally accurate frequency response. Its dual-layer, large-diameter voice coil exhibits a crystal-clear sound with negligible distortion — a full 6dB lower than its nearest competitor. At continuous reference-level output, the IN-8 V2 boasts at least 20dB of headroom to allow for transient spikes. What's more, this studio monitor employs larger magnets and voice coils than others in its class, resulting in super-accurate low-end response and impressive low-frequency extension. At Sweetwater, we've found that the IN-8 V2 empowers you to mix with confidence. Once you dial it in on a set of these monitors, it will sound great everywhere.

Coaxial design yields rock-solid imaging

With a typical 2-way studio monitor, its woofer and tweeter produce energy at the same time, creating an interference pattern at the speaker's crossover point. Waveguides are generally employed to reduce the interference; however, the speaker still produces a directivity anomaly because the two drivers are in two separate positions. The Kali Audio IN-8 V2's coaxial high- and mid-frequency drivers, on the other hand, occupy the same space. This puts them within a quarter wavelength of one another, thereby eliminating this interference pattern. The IN-8 V2 exhibits superb directivity — better than any non-coaxial design — covering your entire room uniformly. What's more, the IN-8 V2's optimized-profile midrange driver boasts more radiating surface than a standard waveguide, ensuring minimum distortion and maximum dynamic range.

Low-noise port tube exhibits clean, punchy low end

One of the IN-8 V2's more novel features is its low-noise port tube. Many port tubes emit turbulence, as air leaves the tube at different speeds from different points of the opening. This turbulence produces chuffing — a noisy sound that obscures the low-end details of your mix. The IN-8 V2's port tube, conversely, ensures that all of the air exits at the same velocity. The result is clean, punchy bass with zero added noise.

Boundary EQ ensures optimal sound in any environment

A speaker's position in a room drastically affects its frequency response. Even if your room is acoustically treated, your studio monitor's sound will change if you place it near a wall or on a desk. What's more, hard surfaces like walls and the top of your console will skew your monitor's frequency response, degrade its sound, and give you false auditory information. The engineers at Kali Audio understand this, and they baked a solution directly into the IN-8 V2: its Boundary EQ. Tuned to perfection at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, the IN-8 V2's Boundary EQ supplies you with presets that are tailored to eight common speaker placements. You also get LF/HF trims for fine-tuning the speaker's response. With the IN-8 V2, you'll be able to optimize its response, no matter what environment you're mixing in.

Kali Audio IN-8 V2 Features:

  • 8-in. powered studio monitor with coaxial 1-inch textile-dome tweeter and 4-in. optimized-profile poly-coated midrange driver

Reviews

Simply amazing sound!
Although I've only had my Kali Audio IN-8 V2 8-inch Powered Studio Monitor Pair and Kali Audio WS-6.2 Dual 6.5-inch Powered Subwoofer for a little over a month, I am shocked at the amazing sound. I don't think I've ever heard music so cleanly. I think you just have to experience it.

The previous monitor speakers I owned were old, and I barely used them. But now, every time I fire up my Hydrasynth Deluxe or Astrolab, Waldorf KYRA, or any of my other toys, the Kali speakers and subwoofer are on. The clarity of the sound is amazing. Music I am working on in Ableton that I thought was a good mix? No! Back to the drawing board now that I can hear what it really sounds like.
It was a large chunk of money upfront; however, I plan to enjoy these beautiful sounds for a long time.

A couple of other notes for success:
1. Get the good cables, it matters! Exceptionally clean with no line noise, the Mogami Platinum Studio Microphone Cables are off the charts!
2. I run all my sounds that enter the Kali speakers/subwoofer through a new Mackie ProFX16v3 16-channel Mixer with USB and Effects. Super clean and easy to use.
3. To get the music out of Ableton and into the Mackie ProFX16v3 -> Kali speakers/subwoofer, I bought a Universal Audio Volt 476P. Four channels of super clean goodness.
4. Clean power. Get an AVR UPS for your gear! From Google: AVR is also known as Automatic Voltage Stabilizer (AVS). It stabilizes the mains power supply voltage to a load which provides protection from power problems such as sags, brownouts, and surges.

See you on the other side of the black.

Skeptical then Surprised
I've owned many monitors over the past fifty years of home studio life. My old 2-way Dynaudios have served me well but it was time for an upgrade.

My first impression was good, but over the coming weeks I had mixed feelings, particularly with the bass response.

I found the 8" cones to be mounted very tight, stiff. There isn't much room for excursion compared to just about any other monitor I've owned.

I don't listen at high volume (and these speakers are not made for blasting), so I found out that the break-in time was quite long - three months (I don't use them every day). I tried out every setting on the dip switches and for my room, I found boosting both the highs and lows 2db was the match.

Now, after many months, I am beyond happy with my purchase; the low end has filled out wonderfully, and there is no harshness in the mids or highs. These are some of the most balanced and detailed speakers I have heard. I can't imagine anything that competes even at three times the price.

Be sure to spend time with the placement and dip switches; when you have them dialed in, the sound is simply lush, detailed and magical.

While not missing in the low end when used as nearfields, I am going to add the new 6.5" sub - just to have a little more bottom.

Great purchase!

BEST STUDIO MONITORS, PERIOD!
If you guys are looking for great monitors that won't break the bank, then you've found the right choice. We love these monitors. One of the most important parts to any studio is SOUND QUALITY. The Kali Audio IN-8 V2s have great, crisp Highs; Clean Mid-range; And really good Lows. Plus, they simply look GOOD!! Low noise floor. Pretty quiet. We're glad we added them to the studio.
Music background: Singer songwriter, Producer. Logic user since 2000.
Took my mixes to the next level!
I'm a songwriter, mixer and track guy outside Washington D.C. Before upgrading to the IN-8s, I had a pair of LP-6s in my home mix studio. I loved mixing on them. They were so easy on the ears and ear fatigue was never an issue. Even after using ARC room correction software the difference was marginal at best. They are nice, flat monitors.

After setting up the IN-8s, I noticed a difference right away. The mid range has come alive. The stereo field is more refined and wider. I can more easily hear where each instrument is sitting in the mix. The mid range is clear as a bell. My new mixes have more energy. Over night clients and cowriters are complimenting me on how much better my mixes have become. There's very little guess work with these. From a visual comparison, it's almost like going from a computer monitor that can display thousands colors to one that displays millions. There is so much more depth. I think I'm going to have these for a long time. A lot of pros say if you nail the mid range, you nail the mix. They're absolutely right.

Next Level Clarity and Presence (Deciphered Audio)
Had to redo my review great monitors first for the price and as before some frequencies are missing up top but when you get use to them you will even start to hear those missing frequencies lol for that I got them some help from Tonnoy Gold 8 and Avantone Mix Cubes and I form a holy Trinity of sound in the studio my advice secure a pair, they are great for mains and for precision mixing decisions
