Wound String

A guitar, bass, or other instrument string consisting of a solid metal or nylon core that has been wrapped with additional metal wire to increase the overall string gauge. The core and windings may be round, hexagonal, or other shapes, which can affect the sustain and tone of the string. See also “plain string.”
