A cylindrical drum with no snare. Tom-toms (a.k.a. “toms”) are typically tuned to a certain pitch, and may have batter and resonant heads or just batter heads with the other end of the drum open. Tom-toms come in a wide range of sizes for various pitches.
The first tom-toms were of Native American and Asian origin, and were played with the hands. In today’s drum kit, tom-toms are usually played with drumsticks.
