In musical terms (as opposed to haberdashery or sports), a tie is a notational symbol — a curved line used to join two notes of the same pitch together in order to combine their durations. It looks similar to another musical notation symbol, the slur, used to join notes of different pitches together in order to combine their durations and to indicate the smoothest possible transition from one note to another.
