A curved line used in musical notation to group notes for various reasons, most commonly indicating that the notes should be played smoothly or in legato style. On string instruments, such as a violin, the notes would be played in one single bow stroke, while in wind instruments, the expectation is that all the notes will be played without the performer stopping to catch his or her breath.
