Threshold of Pain

The intensity level of a loud sound which gives pain to the ear (this has been defined as an SPL rating that causes pain in a listener 50% of the time). While experts are not in complete agreement on the exact Threshold of Pain in terms of SPL, it is usually between 115 and 140 dB SPL. Most audiologists agree however that no unprotected ear should ever be exposed to 135 dB SPL.
