This is another name for fingerpicks that actually originated in the early 1900s and is still sometimes used by traditionalists (or revivalists) today. Thimbles could be used for fingerstyle picking on certain types of banjos, as well as guitars when a brighter, more percussive sound was desired. At the time, the term also loosely referred to the standard pick or plectrum, but it is no longer used today.
