An extension on the neck of a guitar that is inserted into a slot in the body of the guitar during construction to strengthen the neck joint. This type of construction is used with Les Pauls and some other models. Les Paul lore cites two different variations; some vintage, Historic, and VOS Les Pauls have a long tenon that reaches all the way under the neck pickup. Most other Les Pauls have a short tenon that does not extend as far into the body.
