This is the application your Mac OS X looks to for instructions regarding things like monitor resolution, language, internet access, screen saver, desktop photo, startup disk information and so forth. This collection of user preferences is part of the system included as part of OS X. Additionally, preference panels may be installed by third-party installers for hardware devices or system-wide applications. Basically, System Preferences replaced System 9’s Control Panels.
