Startup Disk

Many modern personal computers can have as many as four separate internal hard drives installed. The disk with the operating system is designated as the startup disk, meaning the computer boots up from the drive that has the OS installed. In Mac OS X, the startup disk can be selected by accessing the system preferences, then choosing the appropriate drive to boot from. Starting with OS X 10.5, Macs can boot from either Windows (by using “Boot Camp”) or the standard Mac OS.
