Sympathetic Strings

Sympathetic Strings
The Indian sitar, as well as some types of lutes and guitars, have sympathetic strings that are not played, but resonate in sympathy with strings that are plucked. Such strings are most often tuned to specific notes, so that when those notes are played on the instrument, the corresponding sympathetic strings also vibrate, creating complex harmonics.
