Strip Silence

A command in some audio workstations that locates silent parts of a performance and strips them out, leaving the performance broken into separate regions. Usually the sensitivity or threshold can be adjusted by the user so important parts of things like sustaining notes aren’t removed. The function has been used as a unique way to accomplish the same types of things a noise gate does, but it’s much more powerful than that. Once the regions of a performance are separate it becomes easy to move them around in a DAW. It makes it easy to create alternate performances, or to copy a well performed passage to other parts of a song. The possibilities are endless.
