Strat S1 Switching

Q: In Friday’s Tech Tip, you talked about the S1 switching on a Tele, but what does it do on a Strat?

A: On a 2010 Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster with three single-coil pickups and a 5-way blade switch pickup selector, you get 10 different pickup combinations using the S1 switch (which is built into the guitar‘s volume knob).

With the S1 switch up (off), you get standard Strat wiring.
Position 1: bridge pickup
Position 2: bridge and middle pickups in parallel
Position 3: middle pickup
Position 4: middle and neck pickups in parallel
Position 5: neck pickup

With the S1 switch down (on), you get new options.
Position 1: all three pickups in series
Position 2: bridge and middle pickups in series
Position 3: middle and neck pickups in series
Position 4: bridge and neck pickups out of phase, with a special tone capacitor
Position 5: bridge and middle pickups in series and out of phase, in parallel with the neck pickup
