The device used to add tension to the snares on a snare drum. The strainer is paired with a “butt plate,” which secures the snares on one side of the drum rim, while the strainer secures the snares on the other side of the drum rim and pulls them tight against and across the drum’s resonant head with a lever-action mechanism.
