A kicker of a MiniDisc recorder, the Sony MDS-JB940 (we’ll call it ‘the 940’) is headed the same direction that pro audio is, with 24-bit A/D and D/A, plus the undeniably-important optical and coaxial S/PDIF ins & outs. The list of other features on the 940 is worth some notice as well: Sony’s ultra-engineered feat of Wide Bit Stream technology on the converters, Stereo RCA I/Os, analog record level control, 25-track programming, wireless remote, and a comprehensive set of editing tools. The best feature, however, just might be the price. The 940 is beyond just a good price; it’s a great price.
Some news from Steinberg: A Mac version of Cubase VST (4.1r3 for Mac) will be offered free to the public. The new audio engine developed for Cubase VST Mac 5.0, featuring new ‘zipper-noise suppression algorithms’, is also going to be made available in a Public Beta version for the now discontinued 4.1 series. This 4.1r3(PB) release will be downloadable from the Steinberg ftp servers soon. More details when we get them.
